Did VZ finally pull the plug on free wireless tethering as of the 4.2.2 update??

Finally, got it. The whole thing was my encryption setting. For some reason my laptop will not connect with the GNEX hotspot using WPA -2 Personal security settings. I kept getting an error that there was a pass key mismatch, even though I'm sure I was entering the same PW, no cap lock, etc .
Don't know why. It works fine on my home network. However, I switched security on my hotspot and laptop to WPA - TKIP......and can connect. I don't use the tethering often, only when I'm traveling and trying to avoid using a hotel/ or other public network. I guess the tethering has not changed at all.

I just got the update to 4.2.2 overnight and the tethering has worked with two devices so far (Nexus 7 and iPad 1st gen) so your case may not be an issue with the4.2.2 update it seems.

What type of security do you have setup for the wireless network? I have an IT issued laptop that will simply never connect to my hotspot if using WEP or open (no security). I have not had any issues moving to WPA2. Were you able to connect without a hitch in the past?

I'm so pissed off at myself for assuming that I needed to be rooted and use a modified wireless tether app because I too have been using Switch Pro Widgets since the OG Droid days. Of course back then, wireless tether was the only option so I can understand why I didn't look into Switch Pro Widgets as an alternative option.

I have unlimited data and an unlocked GNex. If I tried to use WiFi tethering through settings, it checked my account and said not unless I signed up for $30/mo hotspot feature and wanted me to OK that.

But if I use Switch Pro Widget, it works without asking me to sign up for $30/mo hotspot feature. So it is not as simple as unlocking your device if you have unlimited data plan.

It must be some embedded coding that checks the account upon trying to activate the hotspot from within the settings-->wireless and networks.

Just like to say that there is no difference in tethering with JB 4.2.2 and any previous version, a FREE widget called Power Toggles continues to work perfectly as before.
Facts: My verizon galaxy nexus and my wife's are both bonestock, exactly as purchased.
When the hotspot is activated with Power Toggles widget it can be used by anyone's phone, tablet or laptop.
No unlocking, rooting or paying for an app. speeds inside my home average 9 mbps down, 6 mbps up.

I don't question there are people having problems connecting, obviously there are. All I am saying is this: Is not verizon, is not 4.2.2, is not needing to be unlocked, rooted or needing a special rom, is not the galaxy nexus phone. The problem is unique to your phone and it's content.
