Didn't know there was a Safe Mode until today

I must have touched the menu button or something during the boot because it opened with the touch wiz and a little black box in lower left corner that said Safe Mode. That was a new one to me. Must be an android thing. I searched the forums and see it mentioned in the phone sections a lot! I rebooted and it's normal now with my Nova launcher and icons just as I had it. That was a weird surprise. Always something to learn being an Android newbie.

I will admit, I knew there was a safe mode, but I did not know how to get to it. Haven't had any reason to.

I didn't know that it existed until a couple of days ago when another poster had the same issue here. Apparently the way to get to this safe mode is by powering your device (and holding the power button) and when the Galaxy Note 3 legend appears, you press and hold Volume Down and release the power button. This should get you booted into Safe Mode, which allows you to uninstall pesky apps that might be preventing you from booting properly or just going nuts in 'Normal' mode.
