Different colored contacts

I don't have pictures set for any of my contactin the contact list, and I noticed today that the blank 'avatars' are different colors. Some are blue some green etc... There doesnt seem to be any rhyme or reason as to which contact is which color. There definetely isn't a pattern. Anyone here know how or why the colors are assigned? I can post a screen shot if my question is confusing.

I have noticed on mine as well. I thought maybe it was the type of contact? Microsoft Exchange, Google, phone etc? Maybe I'm wrong. But I have also noticed the color squares.

The varying colors of the contacts is not random on my phone (Galaxy S5).
Each time I add a contact it selects the next color in the sequence...
Blue, Green, Orange, Orange
Blue, Green, Orange, Orange...

It just looks untidy in the Contacts list, and I see no way of changing it - apart from adding a contact a few times until it's the color you want, and deleting the unwanted ones. You could also create some simple color pictures to assign to each profile picture (if you don't have their photo)
