disable Google Now on Oreo

How do you disable Google now on Oreo (the assistant screen on left of home screen). In Android 6 and 7 I could disable showing the cards in setting but I can't find it anywhere in Android 8. I have a Nexus 5X.

Press and hold the screen, choose home settings, flip the switch on the Display google app setting.

Heh, I was trying to ENABLE Google Now instead of Assistant when I long press the home button
