Is there any way to do this now? I use handscent...no need for the stock app on my lock screen.

Go into menu>Settings > apps > Scroll over to all> Select Text Messaging > select disable.
Enjoy:)

The messaging app pulls in the txt/mms, so you can only disable notifications within original app. Thank about making an apple pie, then changing the top to look like a cake. It is still apple pie underneath. That is what all apps like Handcent do, unless you use their built in SMS/MMS services but then again you still can't disable the messaging app, it is the service that runs receiving and sending.

Make sense?

Also using Handcent, and, this option is grayed out for me...have tried a cache wipe with unsuccessful results

Same here. The option in the Handcent settings says it will disable the stock text messaging if you make them the default.
I did that but the stock is still activated and the disable button still grayed out.

I was able to disable the stock text app with ICS when using Handcent. I did this to have the handcent icon pop up in the text app's place in the lock screen. Cant disable it now. The button is "greyed out". Looks like there are a few apps that we are not allowed to disable now. I don't recall now which one, but there was another app I was trying to disable after jb update and couldn't.

I know this is much later, but I have been searching for an answer. I just got my HTC one and have tried the above. I have disabled my stock messaging, but the notification is still checked and greyed out so I cannot uncheck. I have tried setting all apps to default to try to uncheck stock notifications, but that doesn't work. I have put in a request to htc, but am at a loss. The stock messaging service continues to be default! any further help would be appreciated. Thank you

I accidentally disabled my stock messaging on my Samsung Galaxy S4. How do I get it back? It looks like it was completely deleted from my phone. Please help. :(

Even if you disable the stock messaging app, you can't change what the messaging app shortcut on the lock screen points to.. Better off to root and load a custom ROM and go from there..
