Does anyone know if there is a way to disable usb charging to a tablet connected in 'file sharing' mode?
I am trying to run a second monitor with Spacedesk without draining the battery of my laptop.
The tablet battery already lasts much longer than the laptop.

Welcome to AC!

If you don't see option in your pull down notification panel to switch USB mode then go to settings>about device>tap build number 7 times then go developer settings tap USB debugging on and then pull your notification panel down for USB option

Need to plug cable in to computer or another device to see those options.

I have explored developer settings / can you tell me what option disables charging while allowing usb file transfer?
I am trying to run my android device as a second monitor without sapping the laptop battery.

I think we understand what you want to achieve with the first post.

There is no option to disable charging outright even in developer options. You can disable file transfer and have the cable only charge the device (for security purposes), but charging always happens because of the Vbus (voltage) and ground wires that are in every USB cable. The USB spec requires the power wires to be in the cable.

If you don't want power over the cable, you would have to try to find one on-line somewhere that specifically does not have the power wires (they would be "out of spec" and probably not have the typical USB logo). Or expose the wires on one of your cables and cut the red Vbus wire. But sometimes the devices use that connection to help determine what is connected to what, and simply may not work.

What are the options on there besides file transfers?

Manual control of charging or not, while also still using a USB cable for data and otherwise connections, was also earlier asked about in some of the Android Auto threads. Folks wanted to connect their phones to their vehicles and Android Auto, but not everytime have the phone start charging. I don't remember anyone finding a way to do it for those scenarios either.

Yes, it seems in order to be certified USB product, the power leads need to be intact, so data only cables seem to be mostly unavailable.

I was hopeful about this nondestructive hack: USB condom, and yet with the power leads blocked, the cable does not lend functionality to Spacedesk for android as a monitor.

It is unfortunate connected android devices need to drain a laptop battery when connected, and a true data only cable would not help in this case anyway.

This would probably be the realm of the BIOS disabling power sharing but even then would likely render the usb connection unusable in this context.

Next I will look into setting up a wifi hotspot that does not need an internet connection. I tried one such program for Win10, MyPublicWiFi, and yet the latency seemed near 500ms which makes for a tedious second monitor interface.

Anyone with thoughts on setting up a speedy wifi hotspot for a network adapter that does not have hosted network support?

A USB condom as a step down the wrong path as they do the exact opposite of what you are looking for.

I don't know if the particular app you are using is compatible with this, but like it or not the best way to achieve what you are looking for is with wireless communication, not USB.

Did you ever mention what tablet you were trying to use? I know my tab S8 can do what you are looking for natively...
