Disappearing home "button"

I just discovered you can turn that off and have the navigation bar permanently on screen (it's an ugly pale colour)... Sigh!

How were you able to get the navigation bar permanently on the screen. I had it there, then my son was playing with my phone and now it is disappearing when I am in an app or texting someone and it is so annoying to have to swipe up just to get to the back arrow. Thanks

Settings... Display... Navigation bar.... You can toggle from there
