Well I was going to upgrade next year and thinking of upgrading from att to get the nexus 6p but seems like carriers won't sell them..

Ouch, that sucks. Well if it's next year there are two things to note: 1. Google could change between now and then. 2. There may be devices you like more by then. Another option would be to upgrade to a whatevertheheck AT&T has on a good sale and trade with someone (sell, trade, whatever) for a 6P or enough moolah to get one.

I'm not. I'm tired of carriers putting their crap bloatware on phones and slowing down updates. Itd be nice to check out in the store to hold and get an idea of how it runs, but I'll order and return if it doesn't fit the bill

I honestly think Moto's efforts this year at a similar solution is a bit better... effective at getting it out of carrier hands, but it still is available at Amazon and Best Buy.

I feel you! Simple grab a phone you like and pop your current sim card if nanosim, request one then and enjoy a carrier's free from bloatwares

there is no bloatware on nexus devices. i have the nexus 6 from t-mobile no bloatware at all.

$600 is still a lot to drop on a phone. financing is a much better option since i was looking to upgrade every year. look at the price of a nexus 6 now at max u could probably get about $250 for the initial $600 phone. so i would be paying $300 or more to get a new phone if i can find some one to buy my old one as nexus devices aren't as popular. id rather pay my $20 a month trade it in whenever i want and get a new one.

I agree. But bypassing carrier stores is the best thing these phones can do. I want updates when theyre ready, not when the carrier gets around to it.

I know that. I've owned every nexus device but the nexus 6. But the nexus devices that Verizon has carried got muddled down in Verizon's bloat and update schedule. I'm just saying that any phone sold, regardless of manufacturer, is better off without carrier meddling. Just like Apple with the iPhone.

The phone is unlocked, at subsidized prices. It works on all carrier networks. I don't get the problem.

I'm on a family plan and all my family members get their iphones for $200 or $300 subsidized.. the $550(64gb) + insurance(maybe) is a lot more than that just to not sign a 2 yr contract which I will def be part of anyways

Only selling the phones directly allows for lower pricing. Part of the reason last years Nexus 6 was so expensive was that it was also sold through carriers who wanted their cut of the profits as well. If these phones were sold through carriers the starting prices would probably have been at least $50-100 higher.

I do agree though that at some of the higher prices it's very difficult for some people to buy them outright. Google should really consider offering the same financing they do on these phones for Project Fi customers to everyone. Even Apple saw the changes in the industry and made their own financing program this year. Hopefully Google will realize the same at some point in the future.

2 year contracts are going away so this is the future. Does your existing plan not offer a per line discount for bringing your own device? If it does that should help offset the higher up front cost.

This doesn't bug me at all.

I bought a Nexus 6 from at&t last year and had to root it to get their annoying boot globe music/animation thing, as well as their ringtones off the phone.

The less carriers get in the way of a phone purchase, the better off we all are. Looking forward to getting my 6P.

Seriously, stop buying phones from the carriers. I jumped ship from. Verizon for straight talk when I bought my Nexus 4. I'm running over ATT towers and have great service. You pay WAY more when you buy a subsidized phone from the carriers. Even though I paid for my phone outright, I still broke even with Verizon would have charged me between month 3 and 4. Everything after that has been gravy. Unless you are on a family plan or still have unlimited data (and you actually need it), prepaid is the way to go.

The problem for many people is that there are still major carriers out there that are unwilling to lower your monthly rates even if you're not buying subsidized. For those people who aren't getting any savings, it actually benefits them more to buy on contract subsidized and save a couple hundred dollars. The choice for them comes down to

1. Buy outright for $500 but still pay the exact same/month
2. Buy on contract subsidy for let's say, $300 and keep it for 2 years.
3. Buy outright but upgrade after 1 year instead of 2 and avoid paying a fee to upgrade earlier than 2 years.

In order to save more money you're still better off financially to make sure you sell your previous phone to offset the cost of the new one. For me personally that's not an option because my previous phone always gets handed down to a family member. Once they're through with it the resale value is next to nothing.

Not necessarily true for everyone. I have two lines, $60/line with discounted upgrades every two years. If I do installment billing through the carrier, they'll knock $15/month off the price. If I buy a Nexus and activate it on my plan (assuming it's even possible on Sprint) they will not drop the plan price at all. There is no GSM signal for miles, so my choices are Sprint, Verizon, or US Cellular. I really want the Nexus, but I don't know if I can justify the extra $300 I would spend vs an on-contract flagship.

Agreed that consumers would be smart to stop buying carrier-branded phones. I've bought unlocked phones for years, with a couple of exceptions.

But old habits, convenience and cheap up-front costs are gonna keep carriers in the hardware business for a long time. It's too easy to walk into a store, pick a phone off the shelf, have the opportunity to have some hands-on time with a few choices, walk out with it immediately and do it for $200, $100, $50 or even $0 cash out of pocket.

Sure, they'll pay more for the phone in the long run, but the store has to cover overhead. In return the customer gets a hands-on before buying, immediate delivery and a place to go with actual, real people there when they need help. For the tech-challenged, these are HUGE advantages.

That hands-on trial and walk out with it in your pocket experience is something Amazon or Newegg or Google just can't offer. Even if they offer financing or the buyer finances it with a credit card to keep from paying a big lump of cash, they still can't duplicate that in-store experience. It's why Apple has retail stores.

So there's a place for carrier phone sales. They serve a very useful purpose and absolutely should keep selling phones. They just need to keep the friggin' bloatware off!

Android since v1.0. Linux since 2001

Yes. If you are from the USA. I have to pay 700 for the 32gb version (Canada)...
I'm hoping Canadian carriers will sell them. I saw something about Rogers has pre sale so I assume Canadian carriers will sell them
