Disconnecting From Usb Tethering Problem

I am using my HTC One X to usb tether my Windows XP system to the internet. Everything works great until I need to disconnect my phone from the PC. The current way I'm disconnecting the usb tethering is through the HTC menu: Settings - More - Portable hotspot & tethering - USB tethering. Once I "uncheck" the USB tethering option, the network icon disappears from my Window's taskbar. And because I see no "Remove Hardware" options in the taskbar, I unplug the usb cable. Introduce the problem!

When I try to connect the usb cable "again" for internet tethering, nothing happens! The HTC indicates that it's receiving charge from the usb connection but I get no internet tethering. Checking and un-checking the "USB tethering" option renders no results.

What can I do remedy this very annoying problem?? My only option at this point is to restart the computer.

Why not try doing it the other way around, by telling windows to disconnect the USB device and therefore letting windows shut down the connection and the removable device in a controlled way, rather than yanking the rug out from under it?

My bad. Try under Devices and Printer. Its sort of like a modem as far as windows is concerned.

No, nothing there either. Thanks for trying to help.

Is there anyone out there who tethers their One X to their PC? If so, please tell me your steps to disconnecting from usb tethering.

When I disconnect my laptop from my One X I click on the USB device icon in the System Tray (next to the clock). This presents me with the "Safely Remove Hardware" option and lists my One X as Android Device J:\ and my SD Card as "K:\". Click on Android Device and after 2 seconds it says it can be safely removed. I THEN go into the settings on the phone and disable USB tethering. Hasn't failed me yet.

If you see it as a drive letter that means it was mounted as usb storage rather than as a USB network connection, right?

For some reason it mounted it as a drive as well as USB Networking, but I couldn't access the drive so I chalk that up to Winblows 7 being stupid, but I was still able to disconnect the device using the Safely Remove Hardware option. I have no clue what's happening to yours, but I'm venturing to believe it is a Windows issue, and not your phone.

You are probably correct about it being a windows issue on my computer, because i can't even get usb tethering to work on windows.

Wifi tethering works fine, and usb tethering works on my Linux laptop.

I have a register setting for high speed sustained usb transfer in windows 7 which interferes with the quick disconnect of large disk drives but gives dramatically faster transfer speeds.

Thanks for chiming in guys. I'm still in the dark but I think I've narrowed the problem. When I mount my HTC as a disk drive, I get the option to disconnect in "Safely Remove Hardware". But as soon as I activate usb tethering on the phone, the disk drive option is unavailable from the "Safely Remove Hardware". So I'm still right back where I started. Pure aggravation!!
