Discuss Task Managers/Killers Here!

I just use it to auto kill facebook, the browser, the AT&T stuff and have it set to auto-end every hour... works fine for me.

Task Killers

I am currently a tech for a corp Sprint store and I have noticed a ton of issue with the advanced task killer app!! I don't recommend it to anyone!! The phone has the capability of killing apps on its own or you can go to running apps and kill them through the phones menu! This is just with Sprint phones obviously but I dont use one and havent' experienced any issue at all!!

Haven't yet found a task killer that works with Froyo. So I guess I'm killer-free for the time being.

When I picked up our two EVOs from the Sprint store (mine and my wife's) the actual Sprint rep was the one who told me about ATK, and it even came pre-installed on the phone. She even demonstrated how to use it, etc, saying it would help my battery out a lot. I've been using it since I got the phone in the beginning of July, but ever since the Froyo update I've had my phone reboot several times a day for no reason, and apps taking the foreground all by themselves. Right now on my ignore list I have: ATK, K-9 Mail, TiKL, Clock and SwiftKey that won't ever get killed, so I guess everything else is fair game to the program. After just rebooting my phone, I have the following running:

Music, Amazon MP3, News, Facebook, Sprint Zone, DroidStats MixZing, Voicemail, Gmail, Messages, Market, Footprints, Google Search, The Weather Channel, DavDrive Lite, Scanner Radio, Google Voice, Stocks, Qik, Sprint Navigation, Sprint Football Live, Nascar, Voice Dialer and FM Radio.

WTF? That's straight off a clean reboot, and the only thing I did after it rebooted was go into ATK and look around. Why is all this running?

its been covered a million times, that's the way Android OS works. it loads things when it wants and kills them when it needs. have you upgraded to froyo 2.2? if so they have changed the way things work a bit. task killers do not seem to work anymore for some things. and cached apps no longer exist in system panel.

i've looked all over the web, checked the changelog, and just have not seen any explanation with what was changed and how it all works. i wish someone would explain what they changed...

I got one right away when I got my phone, because like, four people told me to. Then I had to do a hard reset on my phone and just didn't download another one. No difference whatsoever in battery life. None. Actually, my battery life is better, but that might be because of the update.

Seems like a lot of folks are against task killers on froyo, however I do miss something about them on 2.1.

Example: While driving using Google Navigation and HTC music player, I used the ATK widget as a one button solution to shut down everything. Now I have to press pause on HTC music player and open up navigation's menu to "exit navigation" which is kind of a hassle while driving.

Anyone know a different solution to quickly shut down running apps rather than closing them individually?

Have not read the entire thread. But did 2.2 not change things? It seems that it is harder to kill apps. I use Task Tray which is nice as an app switcher and in 2.1 was also an app killer. In 2.2 it says that it is killing apps but it does not seem to.

i did some research and it turns out that google made changes in froyo and removed the kill API or edited in such a way that it is now no longer possible for these task killer apps to function the way they used to. so that's it, its over, meaning they wont be updated to combat this change.

I dont know what to do i dont have a task killer on my phone and my battery starts draining 15 minutes after i take it off the charger. I just bought the phone 4 days ago.

Need a little more detail here. Have you adjusted account syncing? Have you disabled GTalk Auto Start? Go into Sprint Zone and change all the interval times?

Lots of things to do before you freak out over battery life. If it's only been 4 days since you've had the phone, take a look around the forums. There are lots of useful tips.

Good luck.

I don't use any task killers, but I saw an update on my friends ATK. If you long press the app your trying to kill, it gives you the option to "Force Close."

Seems like you could get the same thing done with the built in application manager in android though so I don't see the point in installing.

I have a task killer installed on my Evo and when I tried to kill apps they just restart and I notice this when I do a refresh in the app killer. I heard all the stories about Android not needing a app killer but I didn't believe it until the Froyo update. Well yesterday I decided to deactivate my task killer but not delete it to see what would happen. Well, I took the phone off the charger at 9am at 99% did some texting, surfing, down loading, updating, read some email and news it now 5:30pm and my Evo is at 95%...I will definitely be deleting my task killer. I had my phone since launch so my battery is optimized and you may get different results depending on your setting but my battery life is outstanding now.
