Dismiss recurring calendar events

I am new to android coming from webOS. I am having problems with my calendar. When a recurring event comes up as a reminder and I dismiss it, the future events no longer show up on my phone even though they are still in my Google calendar.

Is there a specific way that I am to dismiss these reminders as to keep the future recurring events?
