I used K-9 mail and find picture icons presented within emails to download. Is there a setting that has pictures displayed within the email body?
Also, it says at the top "Syncing disabled". How do I enable it?

Normally, when an email app shows the icons instead of the picture, it means the image has not yet been downloaded to your phone.

Check the account settings inside the K9 app to see what the "download attachments" (or the like) setting is set to.

I am using a Samsung Tab S2. I am used to attached photos being displayed within the message body, full screen, without having to load each one individually.

Not in email, only in texting (SMS-MMS). In email, a picture is attached, and shown as "you have an attachment" or some similar wording. You have to download it and save it, then open it. (Some email apps may do all that for you, but it's not anywhere in the email protocol, so most - if not all - email apps don't.)

Your account > 3 dot menu at the bottom > Fetching mail > Sync messages from

Using Gmail, and others, you should get a option as I've attached to accomplish this.
