Displaying Missed Calls

I have just gotten a Note 3. On my s4 if I had a missed call or a missed message, a number would show up on my phone icon or my sms icon telling me the number of missed calls I had or the number of missed messages I had. That is not happening on my Note 3 and as a result, I am missing calls and not aware that I missed them.

I do not use any type of lock screen. Is there some setting I may be missing or an app that will show missed calls and missed messages?

If you're using the stock apps (email, phone, etc.), TouchWiz should show badges in JellyBean and up, unless you have Badge Provider disabled (turned off). If you're not using those apps, you'll have to use a badge provider app or use a launcher that provides badging.

I see notifications on the Message/phone icon AND in the drop down menu.

Note the Envelope icon in the status bar.
This is what it looks like when I have an unread text. Similar notification for a phone call. Is this what you're referring too?

Open messages, tap menu, settings. Hit the more tab. Ensure notification in status bar is checked and preview message is checked.

Edit: these instructions apply only to the touchwiz messaging app.

it shows in the status bar, i'm referring to where you circled in the picture. I've had my phone for a year, always did it, now it doesn't

same goes with my facebook app. So it's somewhere in my system that changed, and not the app

If you open your app drawer, and look at messages, does it show you have an unread message?

I had the exact same issue with the Facebook app. I would see notifications in the drop down bar but the Facebook icon would remain unchanged. In the app drawer it would look normal. Reinstalling facebook resolved it. removing the icon and readding it from the drawer might've fixed it too..but i assume you tried that already? Anyway, In my case, this shouldn't have happened. I factory reset after every update. Ymmv.
