DLNA/All-Share Video Formats

I was all excited about being able to link this phone to my (numerous) Samsung TVs and stream straight through. In the past I had problems with playing videos via DLNA on my Samsung LCD TV from my computer, but not that big of a deal. Getting the Epic, I thought that any video I could play on it, I would be able to play on Samsung TVs via DLNA.......no dice. All I get is an "unrecognizable file format". Ok, fine. The file format is still the same (such as music videos & movies) as before, and even though I figured the phone would/could act as a translator for the display, I'm not too disappointed.

Where I am disappointed, though, is video taken WITH the Epic. I get the same dang message! Now, why is it that a Samsung phone, with Samsung hardware, and Samsung software, can't play nice with a Samsung Display? I've tried going through DLNA and All-Share on different TVs, and neither one will play these videos. Now, these videos, though taken with the Epic, were taken through Qik and not the native Camera app. But, being that these phones ship with Qik, why in the world is Qik recording in a format that DLNA/All-Share can't play? Is that not one of the bigger selling points on this phone? Isn't that why there isn't a HDMI-out port?

So, now that that is out, I pose the following questions:

How can I play videos recorded with the Epic on a DLNA/All-Share display?

Is there a converter app in the market I need to try?

Is there a file format setting I have yet to find?

Have you tried it in the native camera app? I noticed when I tested a video on qik it was really bad resolution, but the native camera recorder was set to 720p.. so it seems to alter the video when taken thru the qik app. I really don't know alot about this, that is just what I would try.

In my experience the format used by the phone (3gp, a common phone video format) is only understood by phones and computers. My ps3 fails to play them as well.

It would be nice if we could be able to take video in a more widely supported format. Heck, if someone came up with an on phone converter, that'd be good enough.

I have never tried to stream qik recordings.

But I confirm I have streamed native camera video recordings easily via DLNA.

3GP/3G2(3GPP/3GPP2) stands for 3rd Generation Partnership Project and 3rd Generation Partnership Project 2 respectively. They are multimedia container formats used by mobile phones. 3GP was designed to make file sizes smaller so mobile phones could support video.

Yeah unfortunately there's no on-phone converter (hmmm great app idea?) but theres options to convert the 3gp to DIVX(AVI) for PC/MAC (then load back onto phone) which I suppose defeats the purpose of playing it from the phone in the first place. I strongly agree though - I think with today's phones (higher speed and capacity) Samsung should give you an option which format to record in

I can confirm that the ps3 does not play 3gp which is a quicktime format. Any video that I have taken (haven't recorded with qik) will stream to my 360 using allshare and having the media center extender running on my xbox. Have not had any trouble doing that. I don't have a samsung enabled dlna tv but if microsofts flagship gaming system can connect with the phone perfectly then I dunno why samsung tvs don't. What format does qik use
