Do I have to upgrade?

Hi everyone,

Just got a Note 3 on Sprint after two long years with a Blackberry. It immediately wants me to upgrade to Kit Kat, but do I have to? I've heard mixed reviews. If you know a way I can stop the installation, please let me know.

If you're rooted, just go to /system/etc/otacerts.zip and rename it otacerts.zip.bak. Then, clear Google Service Framework's data.

If you're not rooted, then not sure you can avoid it.

I am not rooted and do not wish to do so. I can postpone the update but it won't go away. If anyone else has a solution for me to stay on Jellybean, let me know!

I've read in other posts that if you go in the area section where the update option is, you can uncheck the auto update/check for update option. Then clear the cache. I don't know how well this works thou. I did update to kitkat. My review is mixed as well. I love how snappy the animation is, but dislike how I lost a few hours of battery time and some things that rearranged.

Prior to yesterday I would have said not to update because KitKat removes the ability to write to your external SDcard. As of yesterday though, Sprint is rolling out the NC5 version of KitKat that enables Wi-Fi calling. For me, that made it worth it.

I have found a bit of a solution:

When it notified me of the update, I press and held the notification, bringing up one option that I believe was called "app list." It took me to the updater program that was constantly reminding me of the update. In addition to unchecking the notifications, I also forced it to shut down (also an option). Since then, no reminders. Though, if I restart the device, I will see the notification and I will have to shut down the updater again. To me, it's a pretty good workaround since I don't plan on restarting my device often. Happy with my battery life and everything else on JellyBean.
