Do I need a gmail account on a droid x?

Phone is scheduled to be delivered today and I cannot wait! Must I have a google/gmail account to activate and use the phone? I will sync email from a work exchange server as the email on the phone.

I believe you need it to use the market place. It is free, and not to bad. The calendar sync is pretty nice as well.

you do for sure need a gmail account, not just a google account. whether you use it or not is up to you.

Yup you do, I have several Gmail’s but when I got my DX I setup a new one just for the DX... Like the other poster said you don’t actually have to use it for anything but you will need one. It is nice to have for backup of contacts and then for the appmarket as well, plus checkout and the other Google features you can sign up for…

Thanks...but it appears I have plenty of time to set one up and read some more. Wonderful FedEx says it is delayed till tomorrow. Crap....
