Do I need to backup?

What will I miss after a hard reset (or ROM update)?

I don't text (google voice)
All my emails and contacts are with google
All my apps are free on the market

I guess my apps would go back to their original settings, right? So a backup would restore all my preferences and settings?

You will lose you text messages and apps which can be restored. I did this once and I lose those things I mentioned but my apps, phone book restored once I logged into my Google account. Make sure you check auto update on your apps and they are back up on appbrain.com that way you now what apps you have in case they don't auto restore. There's an app for restoring texts before you reset recommend getting if you want you text.

Nope.

As for texts, the ones sent/received with GV are synced so you don't have to worry about them.
