Do I need to have Android 5.1 installed to receive the 5.1.1 update on Nexus 5

Nexus 5 running 5.0.1 at the moment. 5.1 is available but not installed as I've read there are memory issues. Will I need to install 5.1 before the 5.1.1 update becomes available?

I believe that when 5.1.1 becomes available you will be offered it instead of 5.1. That is if you can put up with the nagging of 5.1 until then.

When is 5.1.1 supposed to arrive for Nexus 5? Also, will I have to manually download or will the update occur automatically (I'm a new Android user btw.)

As long as you are not rooted you should get 5.1.1 when ever it is released by OTA (over the air) method. As for the question as to when your guess is as good as anyone else's. It is out for Nexus 7 & 10, Nexus Player.

I just did a factory reset on my phone to KitKat 4.4.4. It pushed an update to 5.0.2 and then another update to 5.1 the update was incremental. I'm guessing some versions are required to have to obtain next update. Hope this helps.
