Do Not Disturb on Pie, not silent for emails

When the Do Not Disturb is on and I've allowed calls from my starred contacts, I am awakened with every email that comes in. If I don't allow my starred contacts to call, everything is silent. All other options are set for no sound (in the do not disturb).

[I can't figure out how to reply on this forum, so i am editing.]

Behavior:
Sound & Vibration = muted
Notifications = No sound from notifications

Under exceptions:
Calls = From starred contacts [this results in emails from ANYONE beeping during DND]
Calls = none [this is nice and silent, however my starred contacts don't ring]
Messages, events & reminders = none

[I need to be able to let my close family call in the middle of the night. I do NOT need to know that the bank sent me an email about my statement being ready ... The DND feature worked perfectly on Oreo.]

So in the DND settings screen, under Exceptions, Messages, what do you have as your setting for "Allow messages"? It sounds like you have an exception set for allowing messages from either everyone or from your starred contacts. You can adjust that to "none" if you don't want emails coming in during your DND time.

When all options are set to none (or silent, etc.) everything works fine. If I allow calls from starred contacts, I also get email notifications from anyone. There has got to be something else that is interfering. I am using Google's Gmail app on Google's Pixel. But something is not working correctly.

If you have your message exceptions set to "none" then I'm at a loss and agree with you that something is not working correctly since DND notifications are supposed to be muted. It might be inconvenient for you but I guess you could block notification sounds in your email app...at least you won't be disturbed at night. Personally, I get too many emails to want audible notifications and just use the visual cue of the always on display.

I also always mute my email notifications. I recently had a similar issue with getting an audible ring tone for phone calls when in DND all of a sudden. I chatted with pixel support and on the 3rd try we found a fix. Had to do with force stopping the settings app.

Probably a long shot --- are you using a 3rd party email app that offers a lot of notification options? Is there a setting in your email program about how it should react to a DND state?

Hmmm... I don't understand the "force stopping the settings app." But that's the closest hint so far.

I am not using a 3rd party app. I'm using the one that came with the phone. There are no magic settings. :(

Just in case somebody is still having this issue and comes here from google looking for a solution (like I did).

I was able to identify the source and resolve it. No need to disallow calls from starred contacts. It's all in the Gmail app. It has a very complex system of notification settings, and that's the reason. By default it's set to ignore DND setting. All you need is change this setting.

Go to Gmail app settings, then select your mailbox name (you will have to repeat it for every mailbox if you have several of them set up in the app). In the mailbox settings go to Notifications block and tap Notifications Settings (it's the last item in this block). It will show you the system screen for Gmail notification settings. Open the Advanced settings (I'm not sure how it is called in the English interface, but there's no chance of error, because it's basically the only tapable thing on that screen). And there is a setting "Notify in Do not disturb mode" that is on by default. Switch it off. Now you won't hear sound on email notifications when in DND mode.

Don't know why on Earth they decided to make such exception a default behaviour.

Hope this helps others who might still be experiencing this issue. :)
