Do you find that android is still a great OS even if you don't want to tweak?

So, right now I'm going back and forth pretty hard deciding if I want to trade in my ipad mini for a new nexus 7 and if I want to invest more deeply in android or not.

Here's the thing, I have a nexus 4 already, but aside from home screen customization, I don't really dig deep into the android OS. I don't side load, I don't root, I don't flash, I mainly just use the phone like it is. Mainly because I'm not sure I wouldn't screw the phone up if I started messing with its software and honestly, I do think I want to go through all the hassle.

So having said that, I'm starting to question if android is going to be the right OS for me to buy my phones and tablets in as opposed to IOS.

the things O do like a lot about android are the notifications, quick access, and how the apps talk to one another and work with each other. But I also value user experience and "things just working"

So, my dilemma is wether I want to also get into android for tablets, or just leave that area to IOS and have Android as my phone OS. but then I'm rebuying the same apps on both ecosystems and etc, I think It would be less stressful to have all my devices the same OS and ecosystem.

Do you guys have any thoughts?

Welcome to the forums!!!
You can look at it like this. Both OS are like cars. Android being like a Chevy or Ford that you can tweak, and heavily customize. Apple is like a BMW or Audi. Parts are expensive and limited on choice.

Do that being said, the choice is do you want to conform to every other iOS user, or would you like to say 'This is my Android. There are many others like it but this one is mine.'

Customizing can be scary due to you are going into the unknown, but we are all here to help. So long as you read given instructions carefully, rarely will anything happen.

Here is one that happened to me recently.

Golfdriver has some great points. I'd ask myself (and have) which total experience you like best.

I think Android 4+, stock, and then with the various OEM overlays is just as good, if not better, than iO6.
Even if you choose to do nothing to customize it. In fact, it can be even easier to use, believe it or not. My S4 has this Noob-mode launcher that is as simple a UI as I've seen on a touch-screen device.

The neat thing is that if you do choose to customize your phone there's so many possibilities, so many options. You don't have to root your phone or replace the ROM...those are just options. Wanna make your device look like iOS for a day? You can do that. Wanna change the font around to your heart's content? You can do that. Wanna change the ROM? Go for it.

The fact is, with Android these are all choice you get to make. Never mind the plethora of different hardware you get to choose from.

You don't have to root to enjoy customization. I find that stock Android gives me plenty of customization options, and there are also plenty of apps that don't require root that can also drastically change the look of your UI (like Nova Launcher, Apex Launcher, DashClock, etc.).
