Do you have to have a GMail account, or just a Google account?

I am fully baptized in google...gmail, voice, contacts, etc.. However, my wife is still clinging to her Yahoo! mail account. I have converted her to everything else, just not email.

We are both getting our first android phones tomorrow.

When setting up a new android phone, will she have to have a google gmail account, or will just entering in her google account info do the trick?

she will need an actual gmail account, not just a google account. if she wants to pay for yahoo plus, she can forward all of her yahoo email to her gmail so her yahoo will still get "pushed" to her phone

I'm not worried about setting up and receiving her email...the new yahoo mail app will take care of that. I am wondering if I will need a gmail account to be able to sync up with her google calendar, contacts, etc.

I'm pretty sure that having a Google account automatically gives you a gmail account. I automatically had a reader account and google docs account even though I didn't specifically sign up for them.

If I remember correctly when you first sign into your phone it asks for a google account, not a gmail specifically. I think they are all inclusive accounts even if you don't use all of the options. Like having a Yahoo account gives you a Flickr account.

I think you are right for everything but the gmail. When I signed my wife up for calendar, contacts, etc., I used her ...@yahoo.com email address as the sign in. I only signed up for one site and then all I had to do was sign in to get the rest. However, for gmail, it asks for a new signup so you can pick your email name. Obviously, ....@yahoo.com@gmail.com wouldn't fly. Well, I guess I'll find out tomorrow when I get her phone and try to do it without a gmail account.

For future readers of this post....

You have to have a GMail account (not just a google account) to setup your other google services. It asked my wife for her google account login, then told her she had to create a gmail account to continue. No biggie, since it was free and she doesn't have to use it as her primary account.

Good to know. Never encountered this situation before. Thanks for updating us.
