do you miss the headphone jack?

The benefit is they make more room for the screen aka bezels. Only needing a charging port vs and audio port + charging port along with the cameras and speakers. I also think with type c there will eventually be third-party peripherals we will be able to use with our phones.

If only that actually made the Pixel 2 look better but it didn't. From the front, it actually looks worse than Pixel 1. I know that is subjective, but the fact is that the Pixel 2 has a worse body to screen ratio than Pixel 1. And even more evident is the Galaxy phones, which have amazing body to screen ratios and ip68 but do just fine with leaving the headphone jack in place.

I don't think we will see a 3.5 jack on Samsung much longer

I just got my phone last night and have been trying to find wireless headphones for a couple of days. In the meantime Ive been using the dongle and it works just fine and I do not mind it at all. So for now I do not miss it as it seems nothing has really changed for me.

Yeah the pixel 2 is weird looking I'm referring to the pixel 2 xl sorry I wasn't clear. I think in this case it had a lot to do with the front facing speakers. Info love the back of the pixel 2 though looks great. :)

I agree, since why not, it increases profits. This has been my point all along.

I can't judge them for making profits because that's why they exist, unless, it turns into something unethical.
At best it's a minor inconvenience for some, a major one for others, but many simply care. The bottom line is that I don't see anything that actually changes for most people except using an adapter. I bought an extra for a convenience. What I do see is opportunities for those that want an enhanced audio experience and those that don't know they want it yet.
We are creatures of habit and resistant to anything outside the norm. That's just way it is.
Last year around this time I strongly opposed losing the Jack....Now I'm actually enjoying because at least Google put the DAC outside the phone in the Dongle and this creates other opportunities to enjoy our devices. Change is good....

What's DAC stand for?

It's interesting to debate it, but I guess you are right in that tech will change and they will force us to change since they are in control. I just like more options and less dongles.

I only miss it when I look to plug my phone in a random stereo and then realize I can't. after a while that will go away

Well, that is the challenge... The only reason why are even having this conversation is that pickings are pretty slim when it comes to accessories that support USB digital audio. That's going to take some time.

And I question if we even get them. They might just want to push Bluetooth more than USB C headphones. This is what makes it so frustrating to me since Bluetooth still isn't as reliable as plugging into a 3.5mm jack.

And they give us an adapter....it's really not as bad as I'm hearing. I haven't stopped using my expensive wired headphones or earbuds yet. I haven't noticed any Bluetooth reliability issues with headphones, unless you're referring to Autos. In which case you could still plug-in sit back and enjoy. I know you prefer the 3.5 Jack and in many ways I do too but I see some opportunities and I'm just going to let it ride.

My auto is actually the most reliable Bluetooth I have lol. Yay FR-S! Haha. But if I'm out doing stuff, I will get random interference every now and then. Also the pairing will decide to stop and restart. It's just wonky.

As for dongles, I am not about the #donglelife , but if that's how you roll, so be it. I will say that I always use some Apple wired earbuds for when I talk on the phone. I had bought an Essential phone to try out (sent it back already), and when I tried using my Apple earbuds on a call through the dongle, whoever I was talking to said I sounded like a deranged robot.

We'll get them. There will always be a place for wired devices... I'm surprised that we don't have more on the market to be honest. If I was a mid or high end accessories manufacturer and I was given the option to wrestle back control of sound quality, I'd take it in a hot second.

Once the majority of phones support USB-C digital audio and we have plenty of gear, you can take your higher end USB-C/DA headphones and have them perform the same on any phone... Even if the phone had a 3.5mm jack, why use it when you can get much better sound over USB-C?

Well yes, when (if) we get to that point, then I would not mind to lose the headphone jack. That would be like saying why would my entertainment center need to still have a VHS player when I can have blu ray or better? But right now, I don't see enough reason to remove the headphone jack because there just isn't enough incentive to do so, other than, what I assume to be, monetary reasons.

For one thing space....as they cram more diabolical electronics inside something has to give especially considering how thin these phones become. It's just a bitter pill to swallow at times but I'm getting used to it. Switching from my LG V20 and V30 I've given up a lot. V20 I gave removable battery, and that silly IR blaster. Going from the V30 to pixel I lost Quad DAC, SD card support and wireless charging. I don't mind losing wireless charging and since the Pixel has great sound I don't miss the Quad DAC as much. I'm enjoying this phone despite the sacrifices I've made but that's how I enroll.
Anyway I digress.
