Do you really need a task killer on the Droid?

I have been running one for a few days now, but everytime I tell it to kill everyting it ends up messing up my widgets. So yesterday I decided not to run it at all and the only performance difference I have seen is the browser seems a little slower. So I am wondering if I even need the thing at all..

Haven't used it in 5 days. The phone is running like a champ. I really see no need for it.

It isn't necessary but personally I run a lot of apps simultaneously so having this is great for ending them when I no longer need to use them.

It says on some of those apps/Widgets not to kill them if you want your time to be accurate if it is a clock for example. I just use it to kill the browser and other miscellaneous apps that are running. There is no point in closing the ones that are native and will continue to pop back up like your email and settings.

I use every night right before I go to sleep so my Droid will wake up and be ready to go. Mine has never messed up any app or widget.

one of android 2.0's key feature is advanced memory management. this is not a windows mobile or blackberry phone that has really bad memory management. it may not be perfect, but it's designed to properly manage memory all by itself.

I haven't bothered since the battery only lasts 4 hours anyway so it gets a nice reboot when it dies.

I stopped using mine days ago. It doesn't run any different but there maybe more battery life not running it as it led to OCD on my part.

I'm still using it. The issue I'm having is that Alarm Clock and Corporate Calendar keep restarting shortly after I kill them, and I'm never using those apps.

It is my understanding that the os should be able to manage the memory on its own; this is one of the advantages of android being built on a linux kernel. I think it might be okay to use just if you know there is a problem with a program; it might just be being overused by people to just 'kill' things all the time....let the os manage what needs to be shut and the phone should be fine.

Nothing unusal, same thing I did with my old BB (email and yak) but this is a far more powerful device so obviously it's only going to last a 10th as long. Duh.

I believe the alarm clock and corporate calendar are native apps and will simply run in the background, just like Blackberries have around 5 or 6 native apps running constantly for the phone to work. I'm not sure, but I don't think those apps could be shut down, can anyone clarify?

it could be that a different application needs those to be running to function properly... unless you start experiencing performance issues i would just let them run. as stated, the OS will prioritize them.

They can't be shut down for good. They will continue to pop up and run on their own.

I have been running the device for over two months and never used a Task Killer.. I let android handle it and the device is always ready to go. Coming from windows mobile and Blackberry devices its refreshing not to have to worry about it..

I think this is weird as well. I was a power user of my BB and I use my Droid even more. It also does like a ton more things (and more power intensive things) and my battery life has been comparable. I can easily make it through a full day on one charge...except for today interestingly enough. Will post about that soon.
