So with the new crop of android devices, and the rumored iPhone 8 with minimal bezels, do you think that smartphones with large bezels now look outdated?

Nope. I still think the bezel-less craze is mostly style over substance. I don't want my fingertips accidentally touching the edges of the screen, or blocking anything on the margins of the screen.

I don't think they need to be "bezelless" as some claim, but shrinking of the bezels is a nice change to making phones with larger screens smaller in hand.

The idea of totally bezelless phones is completely dumb. Phones should have bezels that are in the "goldilocks zone" of size.

Yes, they look very dated to me, I hate large bezels, they make the display seem smaller.

Note that even before the Full Touch days phones intended for Multimedia like the Nokia N95-8GB, N96, N97 etc... Had slimmer bezels than their lesser counterparts. At that time they focused on the Side Bezels being smaller, as the equipment in the Chin and Top were large.

I guess I should clarify my previous post -- I agree that large bezels look outdated now. I just don't like the idea of no bezels.

Agree. No bezels is not what people want, we just want smaller bezels lol

Not at all! I don't necessarily think the bezel-less look is the way to go. A phone can be aesthetically pleasing and workable in other respects as well. Bezel-widen or bezel-less - those things don't really mean much to me when considering an upgrade. Actually, I'd learn closer to the middle, because I know I'd drop the phone if I couldn't get a good grip on it.

I have a Samsung galaxy S7 Edge which is now in the process of being sold as I really don't like the edge screen. I bought myself a Sony Xperia XZ premium with a nice flat screen and big top and bottom bezels and I love it. Dual front facing speakers and room to rest my thumbs. I think the phone is really nice designed and classy looking, but what anyone else thinks does not bother me.
As an added bonus no Touchwiz 😁
I do think bezeless phones are a bit of a gimik and I hope manufacturer's reverse the trend.

Yeah. No bezels force you to use phones two handed. The one handed mode does make it a bit easier, but not the best idea. Plus no bezels. Make it harder to make good cases. You want fragile glass phones? Ok give me bezels for my case. If you don't want me using cases, everybody should start making 'Active' versions and sell them everywhere for people who want flagship performance on rugged/tough devices.
