Do you use Hangouts for SMS?

I used it until I tried to SMS message someone, but they are on Hangouts too, and it would not allow me to send them an SMS. I have other friends who are on Hangouts and it allowed me to select either Hangouts or SMS, but for that one person, it would not. There are other things I don't really like about it. There is virtually no customization.

I use it but I miss the actionable notification of "Mark as read" right from the notification pane. That was handy in the Jellybean Messenger app for short incoming SMS that I wanted to dismiss right away as being read. For example when someone sends you a text response that says only "OK".

I have never had Hangouts refuse to allow me to send an SMS to a contact. If you have that problem, you probably have the person's phone number categorized as a "Home" telephone number.

i have a note 2 and my contacts appear jus fine
and to choose between a hangout or a sms i jus choose a google+ contact or a phone contact

So " The Golden Word " here seems to be GOOGLE +...I don't and won't have Google +... My wife has Google + and her Hangouts works just fine .
If , like Apple forces use , I am forced to have Google + so as to be able to use other Google apps to there full ,
I will most definitely use a third party app and will consider leave Android when the time come to
replace my cell ...

No. It's a pretty ****-poor SMS/MMS client and there's no way to enable SMS in Hangouts without completely breaking notifications for the default SMS client. It is also so severely lacking in features compared to the default SMS client that the only reason to use it is if you wanted to send a picture while chatting in Hangouts but didn't want to switch clients (because I'm not going to sign up for Google+ just to send images).

With all the hoops you have to jump through, you're better off just using Facebook Messenger 100% of the time and moving on.

i have this problem as well, only one of my contacts too! i can choose between sms, or hangouts with every contact except this one, it drives me crazy! i never thought about looking to see if his number was listed as a home number, but i never had this problem with the default messaging app on any other phone i have ever had... so that tells me hangouts is broken... i like some things about it, but i dont like the lack of features and custimization.. the all white background with white text blocks is horrible looking... i will give it one more chance, after that off to a third party app!

I use Hello. I love how minimal it is.

Setting aside the fact that you're an OSU fan, I checked out Hello and I'm intrigued. It looks like a very nice app, and I will probably try it out. I've been using Hangouts, since it has met my needs for the most part, but Hello looks nice.

i am also a osu fan, born and raised in ohio. but the fact your avatar is a detroit logo, i am surprised you like ohio state

Ohio State fan and Detroit Tigers fan checking in. I was in Toledo most of my life and Detroit was my first love as a kid.

Anyways I switched to Textra. I just couldn't get into Hangouts even though I do love Hangouts. I just feel it didn't integrate well. It's trying to shove Google Hangouts and emails down your throat making texting a little less seamless.

I use it. Would rather not deal with two apps. Not full featured but i don't need much and I'm sure it will improve.

It's not the best solution for SMS but I'm sure it'll improve. So yes, I use it and will continue on using it.

I used to use Facebook messenger with SMS integration, but they ditched it. I am now using hangouts.

Its very new, so quite limited, but I am going to persist with it as its quite a revolutionary idea and I am sure google have big plans for it.

One major issue I have though is that contacts sometimes seem to be duplicated depending on the number of circles they are attached too.

Not sure why you think I like OSU. I'm a UM fan.

I tried out Hello though...and it was too minimal and basic for me. Felt like Hangouts was better. That's what I keep coming back to as I try out different texting apps - they seem cool at first because they're different, but once that factor wears off, I start to realize that Hangouts is better. I'm trying Textra now too, and I like that you get the popup text and can reply without having to open the app, but I'm still liking the Hangouts UI and overall experience better.

I like Hangouts as much as the next person...but what's revolutionary about it?

Yes I use it. I don't use the Google plus part of it at all but I'm very used to it now

Ok, maybe revolutionary was the wrong word, what I mean is the 'standard' is to use two sepparate apps, one for messaging and one for SMS, Its a little different to combine the two, which is going to cause a lot of 'oh, i dont like that idea', but its just another change to get used to.

I am starting to get the feeling that the Nexus line of phones is not what I expected them to be .
Being a " Google designed cellphone " I really expected a much higher level of software quality and performance .
Yes I know the phone is VERY CHEAP , that is not the reason I bought it , I bought it because it is a NEXUS !
I have the Nexus 5 and am not happy with the most basic of things , the telephone part of the cellphone
it is most definitely not user friendly nor is the LG menu .

P.S . I was disappointing to hear that LG was making the Nexus 5 because of this very bad menu layout ( this is my opinion ).

tried it. didnt like all the google + intergration stuff. so I downloaded the aosp sms and use that in combination with whatsapp.

Google is responsible for the menu layout. LG just built the hardware.

while im not a big fan of 3rd party apps i hate hangouts even more. maybe it depends on if you chat from your gmail a lot but i do - i don't want texts cluttering up my chats and vice versa when I'm looking on the phone. installed textra yesterday, using that now.
