DOA with single core @ $299 IMHO

Thanks. Fixed.

If this is the phone you will have for the next 1-2 years, does it make sense to at least wait to see the announcement this month?

That's a valid point, without a doubt.

and after this phone releases, I should wait another month to see what the Bionic specs will be... and then once that is released, I should wait another month to see what the new Apple phone is going to look like... and then..

I guess the question is, how long to wait if you can find one that makes you happy right now.

Will it be 4G? If not, i can see the $199 pricetag... but if it's 4G, they're not going to offer it at $50-100 less than the other 4G competition.

He's saying it would LTE, which would be Verizon's "4G" network; but where is he getting his info from?

I think he's just speculating about LTE. I think most of us would really like it to be LTE, and it would make the most sense from a marketing standpoint to release the best phone yet with the best network technology yet. But there is NO official information suggesting an LTE version is even being considered. We also have information from BMX that current-gen LTE radios would not fit inside the GS2 shell, meaning it would either be a good bit thicker, or have to wait for new radios. More than likely, however, we won't see an LTE version for some time.

All of the GS variants were in different shells as well so I don't see why they would not be able to make a thicker GS2 with lte.

I think it all comes down to how much control Samsung wants to exert, and how hard VZW wants to promote their LTE network. It would be great for VZW if it was LTE, for all the obvious reasons. And unless the Bionic ends up being even better, the GS2 will be their flagship for awhile, only makes sense to run it on their flagship network. But Samsung seems to be making a pretty big deal about how thin it is, alot of the overseas advertising focuses on that specifically. It appears that Samsung's marketing dept. considers the extremely thin design to be an "essential feature", so I don't think they would make a thicker variant without a lot of convincing.

VZW is certainly capable of putting that kind of pressure on them, however it would be some time before such a device was ready, given the current incubation time we're seeing for LTE devices. That, combined with the fact that the Charge just launched and neither company wants to hurt its sales, makes it very unlikely that we would see an LTE GS2 anytime soon.

Again, I'd love to be proven wrong, but I just don't see it happening. VZW won't want to be the only carrier without this phone for an extended period of time, and everyone else will likely have it out long before an LTE version could possibly be ready. So the most likely scenario is that VZW will release a thin 3G version soon to stay even with the other carriers. Then, sometime around Q4, we'll probably see an LTE version, possibly by then LTE radios will be small enough that the device can keep its thin profile.

Of course this is all speculation, and this could go either way. I'd love to see a Charge-sized GS2 LTE device come out soon, I don't need the thinnest phone around. But I'd like to advise everyone to not hold your breath.

The Samsung Galaxy S II Verizon Function out on June 7th?

Samsung Galaxy S II coming to the states as the AT&T Attain, Verizon Function and Sprint Within?

The source is pocketnow:

Galaxy S 2 US Carrier Branding Confirmed?

It was pocketnow that first published these new names in March. pocketnow, AndroidGuys, and many others are saying to expect the US Galaxy S II announcement May 24th. This would be similar to the Samsung Galaxy S Launch of the Captivate, Fascinate, Epic 4G, and Vibrant on June 30, 2010.

If Samsung is true to form, the Galaxy S II AT&T Attain, Verizon Function and Sprint Within will then be released on June 7.

which is probably the date I'll be purchasing a Galaxy S II at full retail and selling my Droid Charge. As much as I like the Droid Charge, so far, I like the Galaxy S II a million times more.

I agree. There will always be another phone just around the corner. But there are times that they hit a platuea as in this case when they go to dual core, NFC, USB OTG, etc.
