I tend to always end up with a negative countin my emails and I can't figure out why it does this and how to fix this. Its rather fustrating to say the least...

Yes, I had that before I updated to 2.2 (Froyo). Not sure what caused it but removing the account with the negative messages (Hotmail in my case) fixed it, but it came back a few days later. No amount of syncing or refreshing seemed to fix it.

That happens to me as well every now and then, but it goes away eventually. Not sure at all what's causing it, and it doesn't seem to get in the way of the account working. I just pretend that -1 unread simply means that I forgot that I'd read a message.........

There is a delay when deleting email and if you delete the same email twice then you get a negative number but it should fix itself when accounts sync.

Isn't there an app for that?

The neg email count is irritating...I love finding the reason (thanks Ted!) but the neg count doesn't go away unless I delete & reinstall the email account. Someone needs to build an app for this (ie, to change neg email counts to 0....).

Challenge is on developers! Make me happy. :-*

Yeah, I know how to make it happen and the only way I know how to fix it is to delete and resync my accounts. Annoying.

i've tried deleting my email account but when i did that, it said that i first had to delete the apps that were connected to the account (??? don't know which apps were connected to my account) by resetting my phone and i didn't want to do that, so it looks like i'm stuck with -2 emails.

I figured out that this happens in the following scenario (it may happen in other scenarios too though!):

  • Open an email
  • Delete it before it has finished downloading

When you return to your inbox, the email comes back again, but your inbox is at 0, so when you delete it again, neg1!!!

Solution
The only way to guarantee a fix for the negative email count solution is to clear out the email cache and data. Warning: Doing so would result in you deleting your personal settings and messages as well. The instructions are as follows :-

Head on to Applications Manager.
Swipe and choose All tab.
Find and select Email app.
Touch Clear Cache and Clear Data buttons.
Reboot the phone.
Setup your email account from scratch.

clearing out the email cache and data does not guarantee a fix for the negative email count. I did this and within a couple hours it started again. and it continues too add to the negative number that equals 0, this is very annoying. I was up to -15 when I tried the fix, now I am at -4 equals 0
