does Chromecast have a built-in screen saver or auto power-off?

I left my Chromecast plugged in with nothing playing. The screen just shows the "ready to cast" graphics.

Two hours later, it was still showing the same thing. My phone and tablet were both powered off at the time.

I imagine it can't be too good on my old TV with no built-in screensaver.

I don't believe there is a screensaver, but my question is: Why not just turn off the TV or switch the input off from the Chromecast if you're not going to be using it for an extended amount of time?

I really wish it did. I fell asleep last night at the "ready to cast" screen and woke up to find the text burned into my plasma TV. Thankfully I played a Youtube video for fixing burn in and stuck pixels and it seems to have fixed it. Every other device I have that connects to my TV has a screen saver, so it would be really annoying if this doesn't.

I haven't seen a screen saver on the initial "Ready to Cast" screen. But the Play Music streaming has a moving screensaver. So it is most likely app-dependent.

Thanks dude, I have a feeling this video will come in handy very shortly haha. Kinda related to this issue is this: Is anyone else concerned about having the chromecast device itself on all the time? It doesn't seem to shut off or stand by even when the TV is off (presuming its connected to a power outlet). I know this because my devices are still able to cast while the TV is off. Any solutions (other than removing the usb)?

I have mine plugged into my receiver and left the Chromecast plugged into the power. I'm hoping it doesn't burn itself out always plughed in but i guess this is how it was designed. I would be even more worried if I had 1.4 hdmi ports supplying power and my receiver port burning out.

No problem. I'm not really concerned, I'm sure it was designed that way. It has no moving parts to burn out and I'm sure uses very little energy when idle. Besides, most electronic devices these days are really always on to some degree even when they're turned "off."

The Chromecast dongle being a HDMI-CEC compliant device can turn your TV on if it is off and change inputs to your TV, if you cast to the Chromecast unit. That is why you want it under constant power from the supplied USB power adapter. The instructions also state the supplied AC adapter to USB is recommended. They do need a time-out on the Chromecast, that if after a user selected time the Chromecast unit having not seen a cast would shut up and the even non-smart TV's could switch back to the HDMI input that has a signal probably from the TiVo box or whatever supplies HDMI from main cable TV feed. Enjoy everyone's comments. Engineers build the stuff but it's us technicians that make it work better by supplying them with real-world fixs and suggestions.

I ended up buying this $10 Belkin shut off outlet timer from Amazon:

It will automatically turn off anything plugged into it after half an hour, 3 hours or 6 hours. Kind of an annoying solution until Google ads the feature. But I just can't have my monitor left on all night (I listen to music with the Comcast when I go to bed, the monitor goes to standby when the signal is lost).

I have mine plugged into the USB "service" port on the back of the TV. That way, when I turn my system off at night, the Chromecast shuts off as well.
