Does installing an update upgrade my phone to android 10?

Hello all. I cannot find the answer to this simple question so here I am. Just bought a Galaxy s10e and loving it. Had iPhones until now. It's running android 9 and I don't want to upgrade to 10. But there is an update available and I have no idea what will happen if I install it. Will it upgrade to 10 or just update 9? It is not clear at all. Thanks!

Why wouldn't you want to update to Android 10? When Apple released updates for your iPhone did you ignore those as well?

If you don't take the update to Android 10 you won't get further security patches.

Welcome to Android Central! If you cannot locate the description box of the update (usually on S10 phones, there is a description of the update you can read in the "Software Update" section under your Settings app before you install it), you could Google the update or patch and see what comes up.

I get your hesitation to not want new software. We like what is familiar to us and what works well. I hated Windows 10 and refused to update for as long as possible, until Windows made me! Unfortunately, if you wait too long, Samsung *may* update your phone for you.

A lot of people don't like to update the OS version. There's the risk of glitches that factory reset the phone (I had one do that AND reformat the SD card once), unwanted additions or removal of functions, or simply rearrangements of how to access things.

It can definitely be a risk, especially if you have a history of things crashing on you.

I remember a software update on my LG G3 actually hurting it in the long run, and only temporarily "fixing" some things. Sometimes stuff like this happens that makes you hesitate.

Welcome to Android Central! It's not like iOS is immune to bugs either -- there certainly have been quite a few reports of glitches both major and minor over the last year or two. I'd say your chances of having problems on your S10e are about the same.

Wow, thanks for the replies, much appreciated! I'm coming off an iPhone 5s, so having the latest stuff isn't super important to me (though the s10e is a treat to use after such an old phone). I just don't want a problem I have to deal with when my phone is working great and has no issues right now. And I saw my 5s get slower and slower with each iOS version. In short, I value speed over additional features and want my phone to stay as snappy as possible. I guess my strategy, if I'm allowed to wait, would be to get ver. 9 security patches until they stop and then by that time ver. 10 will be utterly ironed out and I will accept any speed penalties at that time.

The update "version" is listed as: G970U1UEU2BSIP which is totally meaningless to me, but when I look it up it does seem to be a ver. 9 update, so I think I am safe to install it. I just wanted to be sure because with iOS at least, you could not go back once you press the button.

It MAY not have been on that phone, but Apple was proven to have included speed throttling of older devices in some iOS updates (until someone caught it), to help mitigate battery life loss over time.

This will be one of several. Google, and subsequently Samsung, releases monthly security patches. They MAY need to be installed one at a time as they are usually not cumulative.

Unfortunately it doesn't work that way in the Android world. The manufacturers/carriers do updates sequentially. You'll get security updates until they decide to push the next version update to Android 10. When that happens, they will no longer send security updates for version 9. Basically it's all or nothing.

On the plus side, Android is generally pretty secure and you almost have to be trying to get malware. So if you are able to delay an update, I wouldn't be too concerned about suddenly becoming extra vulnerable to an attack.

Ok, thanks again everyone. I guess I don't have a lot of choice in the matter. Really, iOS works pretty much the same way, I'm just more used to the way they label their updates. I will install every update until they force ver. 10 and then I will decide if I want to do it or when. Take care!
