Does it still make sense to buy the LG GPad

Hello,

I've been on the fence for a while about the utility of a Tablet but can start seeing some uses for one. I could see using it for things like:

(1) Checking email while sitting on the couch
(2) Google hangouts with family
(3) Video recording 6mth old
(4) Watching a movie on a plane

I don't care about things like pixels or gaming etc. However I do want something snappy that will work for the above tasks.

I see this guy is offered at < $250 which seems like a good price point.

The question is this already getting long in the tooth where it makes sense to splurge for a newer model? Also my guess is it won't receive updates past 4.4 - is that OK? I personally would prefer the Nexus 7 but think the 7" screen is a bit small and I'm getting tired of waiting for the next Nexus to come out. However, if in 6mths the functionality will be different enough where I'll be annoyed to have it so be it.

One additional question - does the LG come with the functionality to create different "accounts." Where both my wife and I can share it and have different home screens and gmail accounts etc. I know the Nexus has that by the earlier Samsungs don't

Thanks,

bg

From reviews and user posts, it seems that the G Pad has been a solid performer, and was often mentioned as a good alternative to the Nexus 7. Multiuser function is supported, according to users in other threads. I find a tablet to be very useful when it comes to traveling or casual productivity--it's so much more pleasant to read or type things on a screen that is larger than your phone's.

It's difficult to say how many more updates the device will get, but since it sounds like you won't be using it like a power user, I don't think it really matters.

If it is unlikely that LG will be updating it to android L - will it be a challenge to do this as root. Or is it more likely that there will be hardware issues with compatibility. I know this is pure speculation but that is my main concern about getting something now that can't grow with changes in the future...

I'm speculating, too, but I'm guessing that it won't be too hard to get some version of Android L on it. The G Pad is popular enough that there is a big enough community out there to work on custom ROMs.

I had doubts about getting a tablet but, after nearly 2 years with a Nexus 7 2012, I would now never be without one.

The N7 was getting slow and I wanted a slightly bigger screen. Didn't want to wait for the N9 or pay £400. Got a gpas 8.3 nearly two months ago and am very happy with it. Light, well built, and works very well. Not a fan of all of the LG software, but it's not a problem. Not bothered whether it will get L or not.

It's a legitimate concern. Personally, I'd much prefer the Nexus 9 with a keyboard if it wasn't so damn pricey, since it would suit my needs very well. I will probably flash Mahdi or something on my GPad soon, as I'm finding it hella slow these days. An L-based ROM would be nice.
