I had sprint for 6 years with BB's and Windows Mobile they never charged for Tethering. When i moved to Verizon (BB Storm came out) i learned that they charge you for it. I have seen in one of the videos that for HTC Incredible Tethering is unlocked, you dont have to root your droid. Does it cost anything? will Verizon still Charge you? or is it Free? or if you root your droid its free?

you dont have to do anything on your phone to be able to tether with a droid. Well sort of not anything. You need to download pdanet. it is in the market place, and is like 20 bucks. Then you can tether.

If you want to tether "officially" through VZW, it's a separate charge (either $15 or $30/month, depending on if it's individual or corporate), and you only get a certain data allotment (5 GB/month, I think).

This is the tethering that is unlocked on the Droid Incredible; I'm not sure why VZW isn't giving it away on this phone like they are on the Palm Pre Plus/Pixi Plus...

Currently their is no option to add the tethering feature for Verizon on any droid phone. That I am currently aware of, but the last android phone I activated was a devour, and it removed the option from a previous BB plan. So the only way to do it is to use an application. The best one was previously known as tetherberry, but has since changed to tether, the icon name shows pdanet. You have to download a driver for the computer.

The trucker I sold the devour to has been in several times and commented that he thinks the internet is faster using the pdanet than the old VZaccess manager. Whether or not that is true or just an effect of liking the new phone better idk.

Palm is in the toilet and Verizon is trying to throw in everything but the kitchen sink to move the devices.

This is a topic that has thrown me. I see people refer to different types of tethering. Can someone briefly explain what this means in common terms to a user? Thanks and excuse the n00b question.

Tethering- using your devices mobile connection to access the internet on a laptop or other device. This can be done over usb with apps like pdanet, tether, or vzaccess manager on certain phones. If you root your device, you can get wifi tether which will allow a device to connect wirelessly without the need for a usb cable. All but the vzaccess manager method technically violates your TOS.

all types of tethering will let you use your phones data connection to connect a computer to the internet (use the phone as a modem basically)

there are different ways to achieve this, but only one "legal" way, which is through the verizon network access manager application.

however without root, you can download an app called pdanet on the phone and the computer it's going to be connected to and do it that way, keep in mind however if your data usage goes over 5gb/mo on a regular basis vzw will charge you for tethering.

but i did this on my droid when i traveled and was in a hotel that charged for internet access, i never got charged by vzw, but i didn't use it all that much either.
