Does the watch turn off automatically when not worn?

Today I noticed my watch (1st gen) had turned off after it had sat for a few hours off the charger. Is this a feature to help save on the battery? I had it with screen always on, tilt wake off. When I picked it up it was off. I thought maybe the battery had died but when I turned it back on there was 70% left. Thanks for the feedback.
