Does Vignette replace stock camera app?

Basic Question:

When you dl an app like Vignette (camera app) - an app that duplicates a stock function - does it actually replace the stock app OR piggy back the stock app OR just disable the stock app?

Used Vignette with 2.1 and there was a vast improvement in X's photo quality. But with 2.2 and now 2.3.340 - the native X camera app seems superior in photo quality. But I miss some of the customization with Vignette.

I use as my stock camera. Does not replace. You can set it to load with press of camera button.
