Dot View Cover: Big Mistake!

Ever since I purchased the M8, I've been wanting to get the Dot View cover because in pictures it looks so cool. I have also seen a lot of videos on YouTube and it definitely looked impressive, despite some of its downfalls which were pointed out in the videos but I thought I could live with them. When I went to the HTC store last night, I wanted to try it before buying it but that wasn't possible because the box is sealed and they didn't have any ones that were open, for instance, and for $60 USD it wasn't an easy decision to make since it's just a COVER! Anyways I decided to bite the bullet since I've always thought about buying it and just going ahead and doing it. As soon as I installed it on the device, I noticed the very first problem - the Glass screen protector I have installed causes it to not close properly.

The case has magnets that allow it to fully close on the screen, but the screen protector I have installed (which I am not going to remove for a cover) blocks it from doing that. The second thing I noticed is that the rubbery front makes it uncomfortable sliding it and out of your jeans' pockets whereas plastic or hard rubber makes it easier. The third is that it doesn't properly fold on the back since the HTC's back is not straight - I already knew about that problem from the videos but I didn't think it would be that annoying. Now you can barely type on the device unless you're an expert one-handed typer (which I definitely am not). It also makes it uncomfortable to play games and use the camera.

Last but not least, the Dot View itself is not as good as I expected it to be. It only shows the time and the weather in Celsius (22 degrees, for instance) but the text itself is far from being clear, I actually have to concentrate in order to make out the time and the weather. In the pictures the text looks very clear, but in person it is not at all. I have tried different themes, same thing. I'm starting to think I ended up with a couterfeit cover (but I highly doubt it since I bought it from the only authorized HTC reseller in Egypt and the case's box has the barcode on it and everything) but then again maybe the whole 8-bit, retro style text is the reason for that.

I came across an app called Dot View M8 Mods but unfortunately it is a paid-for version and my internet visa card expired and I'll have to wait for the renewal so I can buy it. All in all, I wouldn't recommend this case to anyone who actually uses the phone frequently throughout the day. I must say it makes it easier to answer/decline phone calls and of course it is very protective since it covers the front AND the back, but everything else could have been made much better. I must say that the M7's Flip Cover is a thousand times better than the M8's Dot View flip cover.

Unfortunately, I cannot. As I mentioned earlier, the box was sealed but it longer is, and they do not have a return policy when it comes to accessories.

I'm not sure where you purchased your DotView case, but mine was $37 from Verizon and had no magnets to hold it closed. Only the one, very thin, magnet that triggers the DotView app.

Mine never closed flush with my phone and was a pain to use folded back, since I get about 40 notifications per hour. I opted for a different manufacturer altogether.

I wish it was better constructed, but the mods I've come across are free on XDA and are actually very cool. But not enough to keep me using the case.

Yeah, mine isn't closing flush and it's very annoying because the screen keeps turning on because of that. I found a couple of nice mods on XDA but as you said, I don't think they're enough to keep me using it. I already have a Spigen Slim Armor case which is pretty awesome but I just wanted to try the Dot View since I had the HTC Double Dip Flip on my M7 and I loved it, especially the smart stand feature which this one, of course, doesn't have. I believe the idea is nice but the design is terrible, and I hope a new and better Dot View case would come out for the M8 soon.

I may opt for one of those flip covers that also act as wallets, which would be nice. However, isn't it not favorable to put credit cards next to a smart phone? I always heard that but I never researched it.

Yeah, they're not that as great as they could be. I've never had an issue with the credit card type cases.
I found a great one that I used on my M8 and my G3. Not a card case, just super solid and aesthetically pleasing to me.

I think this is a strictly a form over function case. It's cool at parties but annoying day to day. I know this going in which is why I got it for 20. 20 is certainly impulse buy territory for me. I don't use a case otherwise.

I agree. For 20 it's a fun novelty. But even with insurance, I can't run my device naked. I hate scratches too much.

I'm a very active member over on cell trader online. Super cool bunch of folks. We even have a Clash of Clans clan. It's pretty neat.

Back on topic... I really enjoy the SupCase. It's like a sleek OtterBox. I wouldn't want anything else on my phone. Even my iPad Air has the Beetle Defender on it. The price is outstanding too.
You guys should check them out. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I tried ordering it but unfortunately the company does not ship to Egypt. I must find another way to get it because it's not available locally. It definitely looks like a must-have case.
You need a Trustworthy person here in the states or the UK that could send them to you. It would be a bit more with shipping but if you get a good price it would work out. The ordering out of country is the problem?

Yeah, they do not ship to Egypt, unfortunately. I know a couple of people in the US that I can trust with this, I guess I could ship it over to them and have them ship it over to me. I am assuming US - US shipping on Amazon wouldn't cost much anyways?

I have this same cae that i transformed into a dot view cover with a knock off one from ebay. It works great, and allows the cover to fold flat on the back !

I have had my M8 for a few weeks, and I have the Dot View case on for the last week. I like it for work. I keep the phone in my front pants pocket, and for answering pages and a few texts it is just fine. I use Swiftkey with Flow, so two handed typing is not so important to me. For $50 the dot view is not worth it, but for $24 it's a reasonable alternative for those of us who are not rough on our phones.

I've been considering removing the glass screen protector from the device. I have been using the Dot View for two days now and it is slowly starting to grow on me. The cover is becoming more flexible which means folding it and typing is becoming easier. The glass screen protector I have installed is extremely thick and it is starting to make the touch screen a bit unresponsive at times, like today it took me several attempts in order to swipe to the left and such - the only thing that is making me reconsider removing it is that is it very protective and my M7 got shattered before so I don't want to take that risk.

Does anybody know of thin glass screen protectors that work well with the Dot View case?

I use the zagg glass and it shuts flush. Maybe my flip case is more worn and flexible. There's an update to the dot view today that shows more notifications and other neat things.
