Double Tap and Lift To Wake Still Broken

How are we all the way to 8.0 and Google still hasn't fixed the inconsistency with double tap and lift to wake? I'm assuming that doze is the culprit here. I just don't understand why they're okay with one feature breaking another one. The whole point of having double tap to wake is so I can just leave my phone on my desk and check it from time to time. Obviously it's going to end up dozing... Anyone else still having this issue?

If I triple tap I get almost every time.

Don't like lift so have it off.

Double tap and lift both work fine for me in Oreo as they did in Nougat.

Same here. As a matter of fact I use Ambient Display now, too. Seems to work better than it did in Nougat.

Maybe it's just my phone, but it doesn't work all the time. Yes the feature is there, and yes it works from time to time. But sometimes I can just sit there and tap my screen repeatedly and nothing happens. Same thing with lift to wake. And when they do work, there is quite a delay. I just remember my old Moto X and how well it worked on that phone. It worked instantly and it worked every time.
