Downgrade from 2.17.651.5 to 2.08.651.2 with locked hboot 1.5?

Re: Downgrade from 2.17.651.5 to 2.08.651.2 with locked hboot 1.5

sure you can get what you say fully rooted on 1.5 its the rom thats rooted and not the phone. so if you flash a rom thats rooted then you have root ,if flash a rom thats not rooted then your not rooted. the HTC unlocked method is more than temporary, it last as long as you want it

Success! I found that not all versions of 2.17.651.5 are created equal.
By writing this RUU .exe update over the existing ROM (same 2.17.651.5 version number) I could unlock the bootloader with no problem. Not really
This was posted by bobodobo. Yes it works, but it only unlocks the bootloader temporarily with the htcdev method. NOTE: you don't gain S-OFF but you can flash kernels/ROMs
As of yet no one has been able to fully root the HTC evo 3d on software number 2.17.651.5 with hboot 1.50 running 2.3.4

The pleasures of ignorance are as great, in their way, as the pleasures of knowledge. HTC unlocked method does not fully gives you all root privileges. do your research please you must be new to this

hahahaha!!!!

you should do your homework. what does root have anything to do with the bootloader?

Pretty sure Benny was rooted on 2.17 before he downgraded his HBOOT to 1.4.

Nah dude, I think you may be the incorrect one here. The statements you are making in this post are factually incorrect. I have ROMS on that specific version of RUU and bootloder. I can assure beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are rooted. I also hagve about 3,000 downloads

I can also assure that the HTC Dev unlock method is not a temporary in the sense that it reverts on its own. only temprorary in the essence that you can undo it.

If you need more info, I would be happy to explain to you. But yeah, sometimes, ignorance is a great pleasure, lol.

Thanks!

Yeah I know that there is a difference between having full "S-off" and what the HTC unlock does. I don't fully understand the difference between S-on and S-off, but I don't mind having S-on since I can gain root access and flash custom ROMs / recoveries with the configuration I have now, which is all that some people such as me care to do.

And CleanROM works great with the setup I have now... thanks again Scott!

By the way... to summarize the situation described in this thread: I thought I needed to downgrade my software version from 2.17.651.5 to 2.08.651.2 in order to use the HTC unlock method with hboot 1.5, since nothing I did on my current 2.17.651.5 version would cause the unlock screen to appear on the EVO. As it turns out, downgrading was impossible (at least for me) but by over-writing the current 2.17.651.5 with a "different" 2.17.651.5 in this .exe file, everything worked fine.

with s-ff it allows you to write to the boot partition which in turn allows you to flash custom kernels through recovery in a zip form, and you can flash splash screens. with s-on either the kernel needs to be built into the boot.img or use FlashImage GUI to flash the kernel from the zip form. there really isnt alot to gain with s-off jsut one less hoop to jump through, or you want to dev with a ENG hboot which has more fastboot options.

Re: Downgrade from 2.17.651.5 to 2.08.651.2 with locked hboot 1.5

Just in case anyone cares. You can now downgrade your hboot 1.5 to 1.4.

[DOWNGRADE HBOOT/UNBRICK] HBOOT 1.50 (And possibly future/other devices) - xda-developers
Thanks! That's quite a feat.

I guess this would be a good option for those who HAVEN'T unlocked their bootloader on hboot 1.5 via the HTC method, because then (in principle, at least) HTC and Sprint have no record that you've been monkeying with your phone.

If you HAVE already unlocked hboot 1.5 via the HTC method, then they already know you've been messing around with your phone and (as you agree to when you unlock) they could declare your warranty void in case something goes wrong. So the only advantage I see to downgrading to hboot 1.4 for those who have already unlocked hboot 1.5 would be the ability to obtain s-off, which isn't that important for most users as benny3 explained a few posts back. But still it's nice to have another option.

i like to flash splash screens and its not possible on 1.5. as far as warranty i had mine replaced twice through sprint with no questions ask. i just ran a RUU and and the tech never even checked
