Ok I'm totally new at this. I have a Galaxy J7 currently running 6.0.1.
Is there a way I can download Nougat without messing up my phone?
TIA

Nougat hasn't been released yet. When it does, it'll be up to Samsung whether or not they update the J7. If they don't, it is possible someone may make custom ROMs for the J7 based on Nougat.

Wait for the OTA. There's no other way.
At least, for now

It has been promising. Have been running it on the Pixel C since the 2nd Dev release. Since the 5th on my main phone, Nexus 6. Been as stable as 6.0.1 (maybe more stable).

Also available on the Nexus Player FWIW.

Mine doesn't seem stable. The battery took a hit, and I lost an hour or two of SOT. I'm hoping a stable release will fix this.

Don't be in too much of a rush trust me. Even when it is released for your handset you may decide you want to go back to your current version as battery life may (probably will) be affected. That is the number one complaint from Android users when updating to a new OS. I have also found that there isn't a huge difference between OS updates. Yes, there are subtle improvements, but nothing amazing.

It's up to Samsung. Generally Samsung is slow to roll out updates, it could be 6 months or more before it's available for the S7. The only devices that get it immediately are Nexus phones, Nexii have had the beta for almost 6 months already. Google released the betas very early this year, the first two were really alphas, with the hope that the OEMs would do a better job of getting updates out. LG responded, the L20 is the first new phone that will ship with Nougat, it might even beat out the 2016 Nexii. You can hope that Samsung is quicker about it then they have been in the past but I'd be surprised if they get the update out this year.

Nougat is not available for any phones currently.
What people are running now is the developer preview which is obtainable only on the latest Nexus devices (the ones which are under two years old), Android One devices and the Sony Xperia Z3 and X Performance in beta mode.

If you want an official build based on Nougat from Samsung you will have to wait for Samsung to build their own customisations on top of it and then roll it out. This can take as little as two months or as long as never.

I'm downloading the finished Android 7, Nougat, right now.

Edit: All done. Nothing amazing but my Kindle app loads much faster. I should have said earlier but I'm using a Nexus 5x. The download and install was amazingly fast.

My Pixel C upgraded today from Dp5 to 7.0 final. Apparently the 6P and 5X too. Not yet for my Nexus 6...
