Downloading pictures

Got my first smartphone:
Galaxy S4

When someone sends me a picture the down loading runs and runs and I can only complete the download by turning on my data. Will the wifi when connected not work instead of using my data?

When someone sends me a picture the down loading runs and runs and I can only complete the download by turning on my data. Will the wifi when connected not work instead of using my data?

How are they sending you the picture?

If it's an MMS (picture message), then you need to have mobile data on to download. These downloads don't count against your data I cap (I think?), but they won't download over wifi.

If they are sending via email or other instant messaging or service, then wifi should work fine.
