Verizon Clarifies Android 2.1 Update for Droid

posted Mar 18, 2010, 4:27 PM by Eric M. Zeman

In response to reports that Verizon Wireless had suddenly delayed its planned roll-out of the Android 2.1 update for the Motorola Droid, Verizon reached out to Phone Scoop. Spokesperson Thomas Pica said in an email, "The Android 2.1 upgrade for the Droid by Motorola was deployed to a small number of Verizon Wireless test users as scheduled. It is expected the broader phased rollout to all Droid by Motorola users will take place, but not just yet. No date scheduled yet." This message is essentially the same as the one provided yesterday by Verizon Wireless. Users should not expect their devices to update today or at any time during the next several days.

Ahem... check the date: March 18. That's OLD NEWS. That's from the update that DIDN'T HAPPEN... on the 18th... nice try though... *facepalm*

As always we should be wary of what Verizon reps say. There is the image of a leaked document indicating the "current" roll-out schedule, which I would believe more than a schmoe from Verizon. Either way...I'm not getting my hopes too high, but this has seemed more promising as the other roll-outs, considering we even have confirmed images of people running ESE81.

That is the old message. That is a few weeks old.

I about sh!t myself for a second.

I had a feeling this would end up happening, rolling it out last days of first quarter of 2010. Oh well. Unrooted, back to stock. We'll see how this goes.

Sad to see Verizon being a high school kid by doing what it promised at the LAST SECOND (oh sorry, they had a DAY to spare).

Seriously, when did the 2.1 code become available to them? Probably December, and it took them four MONTHS to get it ready to run on a system that is vanilla and requires little to no tweaks.

This is highly HIGHLY questionable

Meh. It's really not that shocking. I mean, they have their testing to do on the phones and network and on top of that, updates to the applications kept coming (see Google Maps), so they have to test again. They can do what they want and in what time period they want, unfortunately, but I'm sure they weren't just sitting with their thumbs up their bum for 4 months.

Plus, they do have other things to worry about in Verizon land :-p.

Default Re: discussion about 2.1 ota update

IF YOU GET PROMPTED FOR THE UPDATE

The following instructions will greatly help out the rest of the Droid community who does not want to wait over the next few days for the update to randomly arrive on their device. If you follow them, you will be able to capture the update file and spread the love with the rest of us!
1. You will first see this message appear on your phone if you are one of the testers:

-Press “Install Now.”
2. The update will then download in the background.
3. The following message will then appear:

-You may press the home button but DO NOT PRESS “Restart & Install!”
4. Plug your phone into your computer and mount your SD card. You should now be able to browse the contents of your SD card.
5. On the root of your SD card, you will see a file called “update.zip”. Copy that file to somewhere on your computer like the desktop. It should be about 15MB in size.
6. Finally, upload it to a file sharing site and post the link to it on this thread.
7. Now, you can now continue the update like normal. To get back to the “Restart and Install” menu as seen above, navigate to Setting> About Phone> System Updates.”

My ex's father is an engineer at motorola in their development facility in Libertyville, IL, and he hasn't had ese53 since december. he's only had it for a little over a month, and he helps develop them! I agree that Verizon takes way too long to approve updates, but I dont know what happened here. it's not like the BB Tour 5.0 Fiasco. The entire planet runs on BB OS 5.0 except for verizon's tour. ridiculous. i mean i know the update just dropped...but how long did that take?

ESE53 was just an internal build for them. There have been others before that.

Good point. I don't know all the details of what versions came out when. There's too much speculation on a lot of stuff that doesn't matter. The only thing worth mentioning is that 2.1 took too long. I'm sure there were multiple reasons why this became the situation it is now.

For the first 20,000... considering that there are 1,000,000 of these phones floating around we won't likely see confirmation of this today. 200,000 by 4/1 is two days from now.

Actually, if there are 10,000 delivered today, out of a total of one million, that means each of us has a 1% chance. The relevant statistical test indicates that if 268 of us agree to report if we get updated, there would be a 90% chance we would see at least one report.

Wow, somebody was paying attention in math class.:)

Anyway, I just hope that this time it's for real and that within the next week everyone has the update.

Btw yes only 3 screens!!! Speech text works awesome, live wallpapers are dope. Facebook still sucks!! What else you guys wanna know????

I still don't understand why when clicking on a notification in Facebook launches the browser and goes to Facebook mobile instead of just using the application itself...

Any possibility they moved the update.zip to a different folder once it was installed? Check any folders labeled 'cache' on your phone.
