Hey guys, I am taking a trip to Asia starting tomorrow. I wanted to know, does the GPS on the droid actually work globally as the name implies? And even if it does work, without service in that region google maps will most likely not work for directions, however is there a way or an app that can download maps of the region for the GPS to work off of?

Thanks and hope someone can answer this today

I can provide a partial answer for you. I'd be willing to bet the gas will pick up a signal but unfortunately like you mentioned Google maps needs data in order to render your position on a map. so unless there is cdma coverage, it won't work. as far as an alternate program with related maps ...I'm not sure. sorry that's probably not very helpful.

trimble outdoors is an app that saves maps and uses GPS. so if you were to download the maps ahead of time. then i suppose it would work. i'm unsure of whether the Droid uses aGPS exclusively or as an assistant to traditional GPS though. so good luck.

I believe it uses traditional GPS also. My Droid does not have active cell service, but is connected via WIFI to a Verizon MiFi.

I use GPS on it in the car dock and it works absolutely perfect.

Droid is aGPS but can fall back to standalone.

There are GPS nav apps other than Google Maps Navigation, including several that store map data locally on the device. I don't recall any off the top of my head as I really don't have any need for them. Don't limit yourself to the Droid subforum if you decide to search here.

I would be interested in GPS for Europe. I know most of Europe (if not all) is GSM. What apps would work best for Europe?

You could try copilot ($) or multimap (free), but w multimap you would have to cache the maps ahead of time...
