i went to bestbuy to check out droids back in december. I was coming from an lg voyager so i was spoiled and i knew what a good keyboard was. the display droid they had for people to play with had a flat keyboard, and i had a real hard time typing on it. it had the battery removed, so i went up to the phone guy to ask him if he could put the battery in so i could use it. instead he just handed me one from behind his desk, which was on. I suddenly noticed a difference in the usability of the keyboard. When i asked him, he said he had noticed the same thing.

So, the one that is out for everyone to play with, and had the most wear and tear and usage, had FLAT KEYS, and the one behind the desk used a fraction of the time, had a raised keyboard. My build date is 54/09, and i have a raised. Motorola clearly heard complaints about camera and keyboard from reviews, so they software updated the camera and released a new series with better, raised keyboards. There is no way this could be based off of wear/tear, unless of course if my entire story was an illfounded lie. which it is not.

Nice repost :p

I noticed the same thing when I go my droid in December. Though, mine was at a retail store. The rep had an actual droid for people to use, and that keyboard was pretty nice, the display model had flat keys though.
Also, my keyboard has raised/bumpy keys.
Manufacter date: 46/09 (Whatever that means)

It's pretty simple; new droids = flat keys. older droids (with a lot of keyboard use) = raised keys.

Got a "buy 1 get 1 free" deal with the droid. My droid has "raised keys" and I use the keyboard a lot. The other droid is hardly used and has "flat keys." They are the same build.

I would bet that the reason the keys become bumpy is because the continuous pushing on them loosens the glue holding the key membrane down. "Raised key" people hold your Droid in the light and softly rub the keyboard, the membrane will probably be loose.

Newer Droids have a slightly raised keyboard. Comparison pictures can be found on this website in a thread titled "Flat/Raised keyboard (pics)", but I am unable to link to it due to the post count limitation.. If your still unsure whether your's has a rasied or flat keyboard you can look under you battery. There should be a build date on the phone. if it's 43/2009 or earlier it is most likely a flat keyboard and if it is 44/2009 or newer it is probably a raised keyboard.

As for the original poster. I would find it highly unlikely that you'd recieve a replacement phone with a build date older than 44/2009 in which they changed to the raised keyboard. I don't think you have anything to worry about when receiving a replacement.

The date the droid was manufactured is not tied to raised vs flat keyboards. UNLESS, they switched to raised for a period of time, and then switched back. My original droid was flat from nov 2009. I just got a replacement droid that has manufactured date of March 2010, and it is exactly the same flat keys.

Very odd, so yours is a older device with flat keys and his is newer with raised.

This makes no sense unless Motorola had multiple companies building them and they are being shipped from different locations with each their own stock.

This makes sense - the build date has no relation to the keyboards.... maybe its a different manufacturing plant. Maybe motorola intentionally put out some of both... maybe it truly is variations in mass production.

bottom line, is with all the evidence, the date is NOT tied to the raised or flat

tied to overclocking also

Ive actually gotten a replacement for my first droid because of the keyboard coming off. If your droid is rooted and overclocked, this will turn up the heat of the phone expenentially. Therefore heating up the glue even faster and resulting in the membrane coming up. just FYI. im on my second droid and its happening again. thinking about replacement number two... :(

I have a flat keyboard...however, my cover i used to have on, which was a beast of a cover, ripped my delete key off after I tried to open it once. Took the damn cover off after that.

Anybody know of a fix for the keyboard membrane popping up? I'm really happy with my phone and don't want to have to return it but I guess I may have to. Its becoming impossible to type on now.

Raised keyboard

I'm pretty sure that they all have flat keyboards and start to raise up with use. so if it's flat and you dont like, keep using it and it will raise up. or if you like it flat then oh well its gonna raise up anyways. My brother and I bough droids on the same day both brand new. both of our keyboards were flat and i use the keyboard and he doesn't. my keyboard is raised and coming loose and his is perfectly flat. BAM!
