Droid Maxx - Hidden Folders?

I came from the Samsung Stratosphere to the Droid Maxx that just recently came out.

On the Stratosphere I was always able to use 'My Files' or an app like "Astro" to view and edit my files. Most importantly, I could hide certain folders from the Gallery by adding a '.' to the beginning of the folder name (ie: '.folder').

On the Droid Maxx, this does not seem to work.

Someone suggested using the '.nomedia' trick, where you make a .txt file named 'nomedia.txt' on your PC and transfer it to your phone, where you then rename it to '.nomedia', sans extension. Place this file in any folder containing things you don't want to see, and it should work.

Sadly, this also does not seem to work on the Droid Maxx.

Apart from a third-party app to hide and cache folders (which I would rather not use), is there another way to hide folders on my phone?

UPDATE: Okay. Interesting turn of events.

It turns out the '.nomedia' method DOES work!

What I was doing wrong: Every time I've made a hidden folder on a phone before, I name it something nonchalant so it's not so obviously seen as a hidden folder (ie: I don't name it ".porn" or ".girlfriendpleasedontopen"). Ergo, I would always name my hidden folder ".sys".

Using the power of SCIENCE! I've determined that the Droid Maxx, for some reason, LOVES this folder name and will let you see what's in it no matter how you try to hide it. Every other folder name worked with a '.nomedia' file inside (ie: '.hideyhole', ".bloorgshg" being my test names).

I hope this helps someone who was as stupid and specific about their hidden folder names as I was!

ADDENDUM: Any time you add new photos to this hidden folder, the new photos will still show up in gallery. The solution to this is to delete and recreate the '.nomedia. file.

If you are trying to do this on the storage location /sdcard, try it instead on /storage/emulated/0 (that's a zero).

The /sdcard location seems to map almost like a read-only version of the actual location of user storage, which is the location I mentioned (/storage/emulated/0). I just tried the app Sliding Explorer, and noticed that it links to /sdcard and any folders I create there never show up. You cannot switch that app to /storage/emulated/0, but you can with Astro.

I just created a folder in Astro, renamed it to start with a period, and it disappeared from view.

You can also just get a hide app like audio manager. Let's you hide pics videos and even apps and contacts.. Been using it for over a year and never had a problem and it password protected
