Droid - Switching google talk to use non default gmail account

Hi all,

I just picked up a new droid and am loving it. Foolishly (and I admit very stupid of me), when at the store I could not remember my gmail password for my primary account, as after a possible identity theft scare, I changed my password to something ultra strong. Needless to say, I was forced to just create a new gmail account to activate the phone at Verizon.

I have added my real gmail account for email purposes and that works fine, as the gmail app allows you to switch between accounts.

Does anyone know how to make google talk on the droid switch to my other gmail account? I tried to remove the default gmail account I was forced to add but it said it was not possible unless I restore to system factory presets. Does anyone know if restoring to the presets is safe and then I'd just add in my real gmail account and everything will just work?

I was wondering the same thing. The account I used to activate the phone is not the account I use for Google Talk

Thanks for the responses. I've tried everything I can think of, looked through all menus and there does not appear to be an option. If anyone has any info that would be amazing.

On a side note, does anyone know if there is any danger to restoring to factory settings? I know this will delete all my data but I just got the phone so not a big deal for me. I'm just worried that i'll have to take it back to verizon to get it reconfigured... Is it safe to just restore from factory defaults? If so, I can possibly do this and then start over and enter my real gmail account that I use and then google talk would use this.

update

just an update for those with this problem... I simply backed up all my contacts by exporting them to the SD card and wrote down all of the apps i downloaded (which were only about 8 since i just got the phone yesterday).

I then reset factory defaults... yeah i lost everything i had setup, but this allowed me to start from scratch and enter in the email i really want to be setup as the primary. Sucks there doesnt seem to be a way to toggle accounts in google talk app, but i suspect this may be coming in a later version.

Until then, if you can bare starting over, this will do it for you.

Really hope they allow toggling accounts. I didn't make a mistake when I set it up initially I just want to use a different account so going back to factory default is not going to help me much.

I can't imagine that they wouldn't enable this. What if you have multiple gtalk accounts (1 for work, 1 for personal) and you want to be on at the same time. I hope they let you use multiple accounts, altho I bet there's an app that lets you do this too.

Any update on toggling gtalk accounts (like gmail)? I also would like to be able to toggle calendars if there are tips on that.

I switched gmail accounts, and yes, I actually did the factory reset. Very nervous, but it actually worked out great. When I rebooted and setup the new account, it synched with google and reinstalled all my apps that I had previously installed, including my entire contact list! Just needed to reset up the pop mail accounts and then added my exchange account.

A few of us talked this over in another thread and I just started using Meebo IM, it allows for use of different gtalk accounts and lets you chat with facebook contacts. It has worked well for me.

Not a problem, a lot easier than setting up the phone again with a different account!

how are you getting your gtalk accounts set up on Meebo? It won't let me connect to mine. I keep getting an login fail error "bad file descriptor"

i use ebuddy to use my other chat accounts.... but so far the only way to switch the "main" account is doing the factory reset and switching to another gmail account. Hope an update will allow us to pick primary chat account with others allowed to be added.

Just use the reset with caution as any PAID apps you have are tied to the google account you bought them with and not the phone so be sure you can still get a refund before doing the factory reset and changing accounts on the phone.

Try just using your username for meebo. I put in email instead of email@gmail.com and then it chages it to email@gmail.com/Meebo

It is way easier and works 100% if you setup a Meebo account online and add all of your other accounts to it. Then in the android app just connect to your one Meebo account and all will come up.

No need to write down your downloaded applications.
For purchased applications, they will always be found in your my downloads on the market. if signing in with same gmail

also may find online in google.com/market a complete history of all aplications you have downloaded.
works well as reference if deciding to sign in with different gmail.

Bonus. can also use this to install remotely applications to your devices
