Hey guys, currently I have the EVO, but I just bought it 2 weeks ago so I am still under the 30 days where i can return it absolutely free...essentially I have no allegiance to any carrier. Should I keep my EVO or get the Droid X?

If you like Sprint, I would definitely stick with the EVO. The plans are cheaper and the EVO is slightly better in my opinion. But the Droid X is a beast of a smartphone so you will be happy with either one. They are the two best smartphones on the planet as far as I'm concerned.

Can't really go wrong with either but I believe the Droid X has the edge in processor performance and games. The screen is also a little more crisp with better color reproduction. Also it comes with more storage memory and has more space for apps. Honestly though, if I had the EVO and was happy with it, I'd stick with it. Only if there was something annoying about it would I think about switching. Best to wait till the Verizon stores get the X and check them out side by side.

I think the Droid X wins for processor speed, screen resolution, battery life and built-in storage. The EVO has a front-facing camera and can do 4G (if you're in an area that has that).

Personally, even though I liked the EVO, Sprint's coverage in my area is non-existent, so it wasn't even a choice.

The best advice I've heard for cell phone choice is pick your carrier first and then your phone... as long as you have a choice anyway (when I got my iPhone 3G, there weren't really any other decent choices as I saw it... not like there are now with all the excellent Android devices). :)

You have to decide which carrier is better for you.

This is what I have gathered about the two phones after reading numerous articles and watching way too many videos: The Droid X is a better all-around device. The only thing the Evo has over it is a front-facing camera and the 4G capability. Other than that, the screen, build quality, thinness, camera, camcorder, processor, etc are all better on the Droid.

Probably really comes down to who you want more, Verizon or Sprint.

To me it's kinda like deciding whether to buy a Ferrari or Lamborghini...you're gonna be really happy either way.

Yeah I agree with you guys completely, Ive never had verizon so its tough to gauge how much better it might be than verizon, I'm not in a 4g area so that does not matter as much to me. I noticed in my area code sprint labeled the coverage as "fair" whereas verizon completely covers it...I'm just not sure that along with the overall slightly better quality of the phone is worth the extra $ per month...Nursescott, I'm actually in the orange county area too, which carrier do you have atm?

I've had both Sprint and Verizon (Verizon now) and have never had a problem with either. I live in Costa Mesa..right on border of Newport and get great reception. I will say at my ex gf's house in Aliso Viejo Sprint was terrible.

Well to me it is more like comparing a Mazda to a Ferrari!!! Verizon being the Ferrari! There is just no way I could ever go down to sprint, no matter how good there phone may be! I have my Ferrari and am not ever downgrading LOL ;)

Yeah, I'm going to be on Verizon no matter what. Even once I'm not on my fathers plan, I'm sticking with the Big Red. I always have service, even in places where others don't.

The other thing to keep in mind is whether you care about flashing custom roms. If not, it is not a factor. But for me, I have a hard time giving up the Evo because I know I can, and already have, flashed custom roms to it. The X looks to have a signed bootloader, which may prevent custom roms, so you'll have to wait for Motorola to release update when 3.0 and above comes out. If you switch phones frequently anyways, again, this won't matter.

Same here! My mom had sprint through her work and my little sister had Verizon and would travel with her all over the U.S. and my mom would have me call my sisters phone cause her phone rarely had service!!! Once my mom had to go on disability she joined my sisters plan and has never had an issue. Even with moving from MN to FL. lol

Yup. Step one-pick carrier, step two-pick best phone. I tried sprint because it was a huge savings, but the service was nowhere near as good (I hadn't ever seen a "roaming" symbol till I went to sprint). I went to sprint partly because of the cost and because I was chasing the pre. I learned my lesson then, so now I will pick carrier first no matter how cool other phones may be.

Yeah it certainly seems like Verizon is the better service in my area but albeit not by much, its tough to decide if a slightly better service and slightly better phone is worth an extra 10$ per month...

If I do end up going over to verizon though, does anyone know if I will be able to port my number over and then return the sprint phone and still get the 100% refund?

always, always, ALWAYS pick your carrier FIRST !! i didn't but lucked out with verizon but didn't luck out with the storm1 lol so i've learned my lesson. but yeah i'm upgrading in a month or so to the Droid X, just to make sure they've gotten the bugs/failed attempts at ota updates out of the way...

I was on alltel, but then Verizon bought alltel out, and my service area increased 2 fold in Missouri, it was great, no matter who I go visit in any state I can make calls even if it says I have no bars.

The only issues I have with the Droid X is that it won't having staying power in the smartphone market for long. By this time next year, there will be a lot more places with 4G, including Verizon's 4G network and video chat will soon become more prevalent as more devices with front-facing cameras are released. That means the Droid X will be capped at 3G speeds and won't be able to video chat and my EVO will still be relevant. I think the Droid X will be amazing, but for a shorter period of time than the EVO and some of the other android devices to come. Other than that, I think that the Droid X is going to be one of the best smartphone released this year. But still behind the EVO.

Why is everyone excited about video chat? I guess I don't know enough people with a smartphone to use it. I'm not sure I want to watch people over a phone call either.

I think that a lot of people have the same thought as you. It isn't something that is big yet because there aren't a lot of devices with that functionality, but soon there will be and the service will be used more and more. I see it being really big in a year or so when more people have the capability. especialy now that the iPhone 4 supports it.

I've had video chat on various IM clients for ages now - still hasn't taken off for me. I can't imagine having it on a handheld device that's bouncing around and pointed up someone's nostrils would make it any more attractive. However I like the idea of a Fring call using the rear camera so I can show someone that I'm on a beach someplace just to make them jealous... :D
