Droid X or Thunderbolt for first Android?

I just got a DX. I kept debating on whether to wait for the Bolt but where I live won't get LTE for a year or better so I went with the cheaper options. Since the bolt will likely be 250 with contract plus $40-50 a month for lte data that I wont even be able to use. It really depends on what you need/want and if you will have lte coverage or not.

The choice here is clear if your getting a new two year contract. I love my X had it since launch, had the OG also loved it. The Thunderbolt will be the first LTE phone, but isnt going to be running duel core so you're gonna wanna pass there as duel core is the way to go from here on in. The Bionic will have duel core, LTE, same screen size as the X so it looks to be the choice..however it still only has 512 Ram the same as the X not sure why they wouldn't push it to the same amount as the Atrix... There will be a Droid X2 also coming in mid summer, depends how long you want to wait... If you are locking in for two years you want to get the best specs you can, because 2 years from now they will be outdated.

For the record the Bionic has 512mb of actual PC grade DDR ram not cellphone ram like whats in the DX so it is a big upgrade. The atrix has 1gig of cellphone ram but only 512mb is dedicated to the phone, the other 512mb is dedicated to the webtop os in the atrix. In the end the atrix may appear to have more ram but the bionics ram is better.

Based on what I've seen leaked - and as an earlier poster pointed out, that *could* change - I'm planning on picking up an HTC Thunderbolt in late Summer/early Autumn when I'm up for a new phone. I'm quite impressed with my existing HTC Incredible, and have high hopes for the TBolt.

Given what you've indicated so far, I'd advise you to just go with the Thunderbolt (My only concern is whether the battery life will be decent; HTC has a bad rep when it comes to battery life and the battery they put in there is, IMO kinda small for it's features).

Personally, I'm getting a Bionic. I love Moto phones and the Thunderbolt doesn't feel like a very vast improvement over my Nexus S (save for the decent network ). I'm kinda like you in a way OP; although I at least have a D1, I can't wait to upgrade, and though the Bionic may not have quad-core chip, or an autostereoscopic (glasses free 3D for the laymen) screen, it's still a definite improvement over the D1 (and even my NS) for me and I can't wait to get it. Likewise, you will probably love your new Thunderbolt. Enjoy it.

I have a Droid X and love the phone. Before the Droid X I had the HTC Incredible. From what I have read about the Thunderbolt I love the phone. The quadrant scores have been amazing and are higher than the Bionic. I was hung up on the dual core thing but from what I have read it will take between 2 or 3 updates for the software to match the hardware. So I am going with the Thunderbolt HTC makes a better phone than Motorola. It is a really hard decision because smart phones seem to be advancing very quickly to the point of by the time we buy them they are already old news. That is the one thing I like about apple one phone a year. It seems like I am buying a different phone every 6 to seven months. I have had the first Moto Droid HTC Incredible HTC ERIS and Moto Droid X. If the Incredible had a bigger screen I would never had got the Droid X. When it comes to android updates HTC seems to release them before Motorola. My wife had my Incredible and received the Froyo update about a month before I got the upgrade on the X.

I with the OP - I have a Tour, and it's 2 years old. I'm underwhelmed with everything that RIM has been doing, and not even upgrading the OS (which, IMO, stinks anyway) to 6.0.

So I'm looking at the TBolt. Looks like a great upgrade. I'm looking forward to it.

Personally, I'd split the difference and try to hold out a bit more for the Droid X 2. It's rumored to have Tegra 2 dual-core and should hopefully address all of the little bugs we've encountered with the DX 1. Hopefully Moto will also smooth our Blur a bit more, as the vast majority of the problems on the DX are not hardware-related but rather due to Blur.

I'd personally take one more high-end 3G device until the coverage, pricing and battery life issues with the early LTE devices are sorted out.

That said, HTC devices are always extremely well built and I vastly prefer Sense over Blur and even stock Android UI in some ways. I also like the TB's 768mb RAM but would like to see a bigger battery and HDMI-out on the TB. 800x480 resolution is also pretty disappointing on a 2011 4.3" LTE device.
