Droid X - or wait?

With Verizon offering early upgrades for people that have an upgrade to their device in 2010, I was wondering if I could get some of your views. I currently have a Moto Droid. I was wondering, do you think I should get the Droid X, or should I wait for this rumored 2ghz phone (with possibly Froyo)? My issue is that I want Vanilla Android on my device. Also, a 2ghz phone sounds VERY tempting.

What do you guys think? Jump in and get the Droid X, or wait for a phone that may not come out?

On one last note, I do want to see how Froyo runs on my droid. I am def not hating my Droid 1 right now. (I won't get a Droid 2 though, I've given up on physical keyboards and the new one does not look tempting).

You'll always be chasing whats coming next. They way I see it is Moto built a quality and long lasting phone (from both a physical and technological advancement standpoint) with the Droid, so why not just stick with their next one? :P

I'm trying to decide on the same thing. To me the Droid X isn't a huge step up from the Droid. I have mine rooted running at 1ghz. I think I'd rather wait until the end of the year and get a phone that has even better hardware. But then the question is, if I wait till the end of the year why not just wait another few months and get a 4G phone on Verizon? Android phones with 4G are expected by next May. Or would it be better to get the Droid X now with a 1 year contract and get a 4G phone next July? I have no idea.

Go for the Droid X on the 2yr contract, it'll be worth it in the end, so that when your ready for upgrade again you can get something 4g and still black slate goodness.

I second getting the Droid X. There always will be better devices around the corner. Just think, when you get your Droid X and love it for a year, when it is time to get another device, that one will be amazing.

Like other threads have indicated, think about whether you like the size of the X. My pocket is my primary phone carrier and the 4.3in EVO was little uncomfortable when I tried it out in my jeans. That said...it is a kick-butt phone and I would probably get used to it!

Yes the size of the screen is the real draw if you ask me but the performance is also something to consider. My Droid is also overclocked to 1ghz and while it's a little faster than stock it's no match for a stock Droid x from the videos I've seen. You see, processor speed is only one factor. You also have mainboard design and very important: memory. Having twice the ram makes a big difference.

don't forget the dedicated GPU! does the Droid1 have that?

as others have said, get the X. if you wait for the next device, you'll ask "should I get this newer device, or wait for the next rumored device" so on and so forth. it's a never ending cycle of technology one-upping itself.

I'm going to get the droid x. I have my annual upgrade in July so I'd rather not have to just let my upgrade sit idle while waiting for the next big thing since that will only delay my next annual upgrade haha

I have to agree with a lot of other posters...if you wait for the next phone to come out you'll never get anything. There is always something around the corner.

I also think that we are reaching the max size a screen can get without being a little too much. Processing power and battery tech seem to go hand in hand so we'll probably be safe with the X for at least a year or two. IMO the last thing they could do to push a phone over the top is a bigger camera lens (i don't know jack about camera tech but have read mp's aren't the real biggie...it's the size of the lens...I could be wrong).

I feel confident the X will make me happy long enough that I won't feel like I chose the wrong phone for quite some time.

I just don't get why everyone is getting so excited about a 2GHz phone.......what are you planning on doing on a phone that will require a 2 GHz processor? Rendering 3D solid modeling software....like PRO-Engineer? I doubt it.

I was never a fan of the Droid 1....mainly due to the blah stock android look and the poorly thought out keyboard. To me, the X is exciting because of the large screen and great looking interface. I'm sick of my Storm 1; about the only thing it does well is email....and even at that the Storm (ans all BBs for that matter) still truncates large emails. So, it is time for a new phone for me......my S1 is falling apart.

I have watched all the upcoming and rumored phones (VZW IPhone for example)....and was positive I was going to get an HTC Incredible (or Nexus 1 that never happened)when it came out. I checked it out at the VZW store on launch day and was severely disappointed with the cheap feel, dark screen, etc. SO, I decided I'd atleast wait until VZW offered the Incredible for a BOGO because I need to replace 2 or 3 of my BBs..........
well, the Droid X will be out before any BOGO offers happen. Right now, I am 90% sure I'll pick up a Droid X on launch day, but it will depend on how it feels up close. It seems that the Droid X will do everything I need.....Exchange Server suport, push email for both Gmail and Yahoo, a touchscreen that actually works all the time, lots of memory to load whatever apps I need, and a large screen to help my aging eyes view attached email documents and contracts, etc.

anyways.....my point to all this is............that if you keep waiting for the next phone or what might be coming next month, you'll never make a decision! This is where the term "ignorance is bliss" is true. Just imagine if you didn't search the internet for all the rumors, etc; You wouldn't be worried about what phone may or may not be coming out. You'd just go into your VZW store and pick up the best phone that is on the shelf........and you'd be totally content with it!!

I have the original G1, 2 years is almost up. I played with a friend's Evo 4G in the office last week and was totally blown away by it, so i'm very anxious to upgrade.

But, I have 2 concerns with the Droid X.
1) Camera
I would love to get rid of my Nikon point-and-shoot and just have a camera/phone i carry everywhere, and a Nikon DSLR for events... but i'm not sure the Droid X's camera is good enough.

2) Screen
I loved the Evo 4G screen size... but i'm disappointed the screen resolution is the same as the dinc (and lower than that "other" phone). I just think that it's a shame to have a large screen but not the higher resolution to take advantage of it.

I won't preorder, but i'll definitely get some hands-on time with it asap, and will decide then.

Jedge,

I gave up on point-n-shoot cameras years ago. Once you use an SLR, you never go back. My wife likes to use a p-n-s for casual pics. I find that a camera phone is decent enough for those quick shots, but I use my Nikon DSLR for most everything else. The shos I have seen from the DroiD X look like it takes a nice shot....espectially for a phone. It looks alot better than some p-n-s from a few years ago.

also, the screen on the DX can reproduce 24 bit colors...and will realize it's full potential once froyo hits thr scene. also, the pixel density is far greater than that of your typical 21" widescreen PC monitor. Don't get caught in the numbers.

Actually...that is exactly what I was hoping to do with my phone. ;) I've been thinking for a while that it would be cool to port Blender ( blender.org - Home ), to android. Although the dependencies will be a bit of an issue, at least last time I checked, openGL ES didn't have GHOST.
