Droid X Screen problems

I have had my X for about 2 months now. All has been great with the phone and everything that I expected coming from the Storm 1.... until about 30 minutes ago.

While reading a comic (which I Love doing on this phone) I set it down ob the couch went to get some laundry done. When I came back, I noticed the screen was dimmed. A lot.

Whites are now almost a sepia and dark colors are really dark. And this is with the screen at the highest brightness setting!

I am running the current official release of the os. I was charging my phone at the time so could there have been a short?

I need to know if this is hardware or software.

Thank you in advance!

First thing I would do is reboot the device. If you're still seeing this after a soft reset, then your next step is probably a hard reset -- so you may want to look into backing everything up if you haven't yet. It's entirely possible it's a hardware issue (and yes, it could be a short).

I have done a soft reset with no improvement. What is the procedure for a hard reset?

Also, what back up procedures should I do? I aleadt used Verizon's back up assistant. Google log in should take care of the rest of my contacts. What about my apps? Will they be restored by logging into google or do I need to move them all to sd?

Your apps will be available to you after your reset. Google stores all of your downloads/purchases to your Google account and you will be able to re-download them through the Market. Contacts and all that are backed up through your Google account so you will be fine there.

Now, to perform a hard reset. Perform the following steps:

  • Turn off the X
  • Hold down your Power and Home buttons at the same time
  • When the exclamation mark appears, hit the search button.
  • Scroll down until you see Factory Reset, use the volume keys to scroll
  • Select Factory Reset
  • Select Yes on the prompt, then hit OK

Let us know if you're having any issues!

You can also do a factory reset through settings>privacy>factory reset. If that doesn't work you'll likely just have to get a new one from VZW. The first thing they will do is a factory reset anyway, so might as well get it out of the way.

Before you attempt a Factory Data Reset, do a battery pull. You may have to do this from time to time. Take battery out, wait at least a full minute, put back in, turn on. This often takes care of random weirdness.

No luck comrades! Still sepia tones and really dark after the hard reset. Looks like I'm going to have to take it to the VZW Corporate store to get a new one. Thanks for the help! Love the community here!

Sorry it didn't work for you, hopefully they won't give you any hard time. Let us know how you make out!

I am just curious if there could be an issue with the reader app you were using. Maybe the settings for that somehow bugged the enitre system. I know most readers can lower the screen brightness even lower than the os can and most readers have sepia settings too.

Factory reset would have cleared that.

Yep, it?s most likely a hardware issue at this point. It?s very possible he has a defective unit that got shorted out while charging, I?ve seen this happen before on BlackBerry?s so it's most definitely possible in this case as well.

Talked to VZW and a replacement is on the way. At the end of the call I asked him about Gingerbread coming to the X. I know hearing it from a VZW rep means nothing, but the tech guy said he personally thought it was coming late January. I wouldn't put too much currency into it, but it's tantalizing information none-the-less.
