DroidX Guide to Rooting, Backing Up and Installing Custom ROMs

I'm somewhat new to the ROM scene. I know I should backup prior to placing a ROM on my rooted Droid X, but am wondering if I should do a Nandroid Backup using Bootstrap then install the ROM or just do a backup with TItanium Backup install the ROM with ROM Manager...
Thanks!

I was taught nandroid backs up your ROm while Titanium backs up your apps/data if that helps you at all

You need to backup your stock rom with rom manager or bootstrap... or both if you want an extra backup. Titanium only backs up your user apps and system data.... not rom.

I used z4 and I have the Superuser app in my tray, however no root apps seem to be able to get permissions and typing 'su' in terminal emulator returns 'permission denied'. Any idea what gives?

I never wanted to root.. but everyone is talking about it and i wanted to remove some of these stock apps from verizon, like nfl.. lol.... so i gave in and rooted...

I JUST ran z4.. literally... temp root seems to do nothing.. so i powercycled and did a permanent root. That now its working! And per the youtube video above, I used the free app "Wireless Tether for Root Users". And it works. I unrooted and retried temp root... still nothing... powercycled and perm root.. back in business... The details of the z4 app (got mine from Applanet) says that temp root is there in case perm root doesnt work. So there ya go.

If you use Temp Root, everytime you reboot the phone you will lose root... hence the name temporarily. Perm Root you will always stay rooted no matter what you do. Even though its called Permanent Root.... you still have the option in Z4 to unroot whenever you like...... so just choose Perm Root.

Trojan?

The links for Z4root seem to have trojans in them. Has anyone else received that when they have downloaded them?

is it saying Z4root has a trojan(like unix exploit) or are you getting other random alerts

If you are downloading it from the original developers site that was posted the file is clean, as for a unix exploit this is normal because that is just what the app was made to access, to grant access to the root directory that is originally restricted. A number of virus scan have a tendency to detect the exploit as a false positive and block file, all you need to do is download file to your device and install or disable the virus scan and download and copy to sd card and then reactivate virus scan.

RyanZA(the developer) is verified as a reliable source for secured files....

thats why i asked if it was unix exploit or something else. All rooting procedures will include an exploit which will flag most antivirus programs thats the way rooting works.

The Z4root 1.3.0 download by alan_jeddiel_17 is safe. I've downloaded the file a few times and its always reported back as safe. Its most likely your antivirus is triggering an alert because its a file sharing site. Don't worry I wouldn't link anything that I thought contained a virus. I'll add the original Z4root apk download from XDA to the OP as well.
