DroidX Guide to Rooting, Backing Up and Installing Custom ROMs

ROM Questions

I apologize in advance if this should be posted elsewere. Have been looking for ROM FAQ but didnt see one. I am considering the Liberty 1.5 ROM but have some questions. I currently have my X rooted, overclocked to 1.2, removed a lot of bloatware(.bak) and run ADW(with notifier and a theme). I feel like my phone is snappy with no real lag. I live by my gmail(2 accounts), an exchange account, google voice, google talk, camera/ v.camera and wireless tether. Do I gain anything by installing Liberty and will all of these things still works as they have? I love tinkering, want speed, but dont think I can do without any of the above. Thanks in advance? :)

You're good to go... some blur features will be replaced with new ones like the stock alarm and gallery with HDMI but you can get them back with some commands in the Terminal Emulator app. I never used Liberty before but with ApeX I had better speed and battery life along with a different look. I'm most positive the rest of the apps you mentioned work correctly. I would read through the Liberty rom thread and see what was reported but you should be ok. If you don't like Liberty you can always flash back to your old rom.

You will be fine.. if you have any issues just post or send me a pm and I'll guide you through it.. even if you eff something up you now have the full SBF and a .340 zip to return you back to Verizon factory settings. I just recently used the .340 zip and it worked amazing...I was missing some Verizon apps and system files... flashed the zip... just like I bought it from Verizon.

So after I download the .340 file then what? Do I keep it zipped and then rename it update.zip? And then put it into the root of my sd card? and then what?

I used bootstrap and then clicked "bootstrap recovery." I then followed the video and choose backup restore, wiped cache, wipe data factory reset (smh, sounds so stupid now lol), and the other two steps etc..............

I got to the choose from sd card spot and realized that I didn't save it correctly and I couldm't turn the phone off so I did a battery pull. and that was all she wrote lol. now I am bootlooping at the startup "m" screen. I have down the clear cache, restory to defaults etc but I have had no luck when the phone rebooted

You don't need to rename the zip and yes keep it zipped. You flash it in clockwork recovery... install from sd... navigate to the file with the volume buttons and select with the camera button.

That's one thing you don't want to do. Don't pull the battery while the phones installing a new rom. Not sure what you mean when you say you didn't save it correctly. You don't have to rename anything and it doesn't have to be on the root of the sd card. It makes the zip easier to find but you can also just navigate to any folder of the sd card in recovery mode. Volume buttons will take you up and down.. camera button makes selections and return key will take you back to the previous screen.

You need to get back into recovery and install your backup or install the 340 zip.
Hold the power button and volume down button (both, not releasing the power button) and get into clockwork. DONT pull the battery while the phone is installing files. You may be stuck on a screen for a minute or two... it doesn't mean the phones frozen... let it do its thing.

when I do what you sggested this is all that my screen says

Bootloader
30.04

Battery ok
Ok to Program
Connect USB
Data Cable

^^^^ And that is it. No place that I can select a file to be found

^^^umm that was something else

anyways lol, I get to the system recovery screen, do what you say, but I don't get taken to a screen to where I can select a file? It just stays at the normal

Reboot system now
apply sdcard:update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition

And of course the sdcard option does not work. I don't see where I can manually select whatever I want from my sd card

Sorry about that. That's the method for connecting to a computer. You can use that if you have to use the SBF method.

I guess you already figured out the correct way. Here it is anyway.
1. Turn your phone off.
2. Hold down "Home" and press "Power" until the Motorola logo appears.
3. Release "Power" and continue to hold "Home" until an exclamation appears.
4. Press the "Search" button once.
5. Your phone will now enter recovery. Exit recovery mode by navigating to “reboot system now” with the volume rocker and then hit the camera button to enter the command and boot up as normal.

If you can't get past the start up screen to access the Bootstrap app then: wipe data factory reset( it will not erase the sd card). If you can get onto the phone, open Bootstrap and boot back into recovery mode and flash your backup zip or the 340 zip.

If you still can't get past the startup screen... you will have to use the SBF with your phone plugged into the computer.

Can you get onto the phone so you can access your apps or are you still stuck in a loop?

^^^ I actually just took it back to verizon and got a new dx since I just got it 5 days ago.

Thank you for your help tho

I have it rooted again already since the root file was already on my sd card.

So now I want to do this right lol, can I just use rom manager to install different roms?

The reason why I would ask is because I would download a rom from the manager, DX would reboot, and then my phone would start again with the same stock android rom?

Yea you can use rom manager. Use the option install ROM from sd card in the app. Whatever way you choose.... just don't pull the battery while the phone is installing the files. Save the zip to your sd card... doesn't matter where it goes...just remember its location so you know where to find it. Don't extract it... leave it zipped and don't worry about renaming it. If you do rename it just don't call it something already with the same name. DONT pull the battery during installation... that's the worst thing you can do. Do the ^above^ and everything will work fine. Like I said earlier you may be on one screen for a minute or two...don't get scared and think the phone is frozen and pull the battery.

Rom manager does come with built in roms. I never used them before so don't know much about them. I don't think they are stock. Rom manager is also going to boot you into clockwork recovery... same as Bootstrap..the only difference between the two apps is rom manager is more user friendly if you are constantly swithching between roms.
