Dropping my Captivate after Jan. 31st

Sigh, to each their own. I just want an official update from the company that sold me the phone. I honestly didn't think that was too much to ask for, but apparently everyone else believes that it is. Lesson learned.

I have taken a step back, and if they would just be up front and honest about a release rather than promising month after month that there will be an update then completely failing at it with no remorse, I would be much less bothered than I am now.

I purchased the phone with an expectation that it would be updated on a timely basis, and they have completely failed me on that. I mean, it has literally been about 13 days shy of 6 months since the release. It is absolutely ridiculous to be taking this long when Froyo itself has been available since May, and has been on some Galaxy S phones since November.

Also, to anyone that would personally insult a person because of a differing opinion: really?

THAT was your mistake unfortunately..I buy something based on how it is at that moment..not what it may/could be based on a salesperson's so called "promise" of an update. I'm fine with the Captivate on 2.1 stock..its a dam good device IMO. I had it on a 2 week trip to the hinterlands of southern Chile and it was indispensable as a tool in all ways. 2.1 or 2.2....when you have used it in the boonies of another country..the bells and whistles of 2.2 is absolutely meaningless

To anyone who blames samsung in the USA who is on AT&T, AT&T is a company that its samsungs phone but AT&T is in charge, they prety much tell anyone they partner with, WE have final say on release dates, features, etc...:)

Completely agree with fldude!!!

Can the OP even name 3 features that he's missing out on? I mean, Flash is cool, but it's by no means a deal-breaker!

Flash
Jit
Plenty of apps now only work with 2.2
Apps2SD
Improved enterprise and security features
The ability to use PINs and words for passwords
Auto app updates
Better OpenGL support
New version of the linux kernel

^^^not only do I not understand most of those listed "enhancements" but they don't sound very exciting...."new version of linux kernel"?! Pins and words for passwords?...if that's the best of 2.2 I'm not very interested

i <3 my custom ROM (Assonance 5.0). others rock, too. so glad i left the stock realm many months ago...

As for updated linux kernels...There is a very good reason to change. i9000 reoriented for captivate kernels, specifically this one:

[KERNEL] SpeedMod for Captivate [K12I EXT4-SYSTEM BLN2.3 STABLE] - xda-developers

are faster and consume less battery. I don't expect everyone to read through all 30+ pages of this post, but one thing that stood out when I did read it was that debugging for just about every thing on the phone is turned on in the stock kernel. So pretty much every time you touch the screen, a debugging item is logged. This definately will slow things down and drain battery. As for me, happily running cognition 2.3b7 for several weeks now. I'll probably be flashing to an i9000 rom this weekend though and using the kernel noted above.

Also, many have said that using the i9000 ROM with some modems eliminates the GPS issues this phone has....

Which modem with which ROM makes GPS work for WHICH person, seems totally random. My GPS would work on Perception 1-5, then not on 6-10. It would work on this version on Cog with that modem, but not THAT modem.

There is no rule to our GPS, other than there is no rule.

GPS Rule Zero- There is no Rule Zero

Find a combo that works, and NOTE it. So when you go astray trying something else, you have something to go back to when/if you need to. Remember to clear GPS data after a modem flash.

Compatible apps are going to become more common as the weeks and months pass with no Froyo.

The first day I got my Captivate (10 days ago) I went to install Chrome to Phone because I had a similar app on my BB Torch called "Home to Phone". I used it multiple times per day.

The thing you have to remember is if only one or even two "killer" apps don't work on your phone because the OS is old is a deal breaker.

Good for the Android (corp email) just announced they stopped supporting 1.5 so folks with that AOS are out of luck with future features. Yeah, I know 1.5 is ancient but still you see the point.

And Google will always show more love for the new devices with the newest OS.

I will be leaving the Captivate also

As soon as the Atrix has some good reviews! Hopefully Moto treats their customers better than Samsung. Do the Moto GPS's work?

Maybe ATT is to blame for 2.2 but the GPS and the shutdown issue is all Samsung.

How is the shut downs all samsung?

There is clearly a defect which affects about half of the captivate owners. Samsung was slow to acknowledge IMO. Look at the number of post for this and the GPS issue. Anyways not really worried about either, just won't be buying anymore Samsung phones. Looking forward tot he Atrix!

My biggest problem with the lack of an official upgrade is samsung promised this phone would be upgraded to 2.2 but it still hasn't happened... I would like to be able to use my full 512mb of ram instead of being limited by 2.1 crap. Cognition didnt work out well for me because my exchange wouldnt work in it.. I think its time to try another unofficial rom. Was hoping either AT&T or Samsung would say something at ces about older galaxy s devices but instead they just talked about all the new Samsung devices coming out with 2.2

The feature I miss having from my WinMo 6.1 phone is communication from the phone to my bluetooth earpiece. I am under the impression that is a feature Froyo has.

If I'm driving and speaking to someone and have an incoming call there is no notification through the earpiece. The only way I would know I had an incoming call is if I happened to be looking at the phone screen which is very unlikely while I'm driving and talking. For that matter if I had the phone on my belt clip and was on a conversation I wouldn't know I had an incoming call.

Although otherwise I'm very satisfied with the Captivate this one feature is a big deal to me as I use my phone for business.

I can hear in my BT (Blue ant T1) when I receive another call while on one. I believe you have to have a BT headset that will support A2DP-not 100% sure tho
